Tesla Motors Announces Retail Expansion as Europe Prepares to Welcome Model S
Tesla Motors debuted its Model X design prototype at the Geneva Motor Show today alongside Model S, Tesla’s award winning premium sedan. European production of Model S begins in June, followed by deliveries in July.
“The European market is very well suited to the design intent behind our vehicles. Our focus is to combine design, engineering and performance with a forward-looking influence towards clean energy and sustainability,” said Elon Musk, Tesla Motors co-founder and CEO. “This year will be one of tremendous growth and expansion throughout Europe in some of Tesla’s most important markets, including Germany, Switzerland, Norway and the Netherlands. Final commitments are all in place and we look forward to Model S deliveries beginning this summer.”
New retail stores are planned to open this year throughout Europe, including locations in Brussels, Frankfurt, London and Amsterdam, with more stores to come in 2014. To prepare for the arrival of Model S, Tesla will also focus on opening more service centers to ensure outstanding customer support. Service centers planned for this year include Geneva, Frankfurt, Brussels, Hamburg and Vienna.
Today’s event in Geneva will be followed by press events in Oslo on 6 March and Amsterdam on 7 March.
Tesla’s goal is to accelerate the world’s transition to electric mobility with a full range of increasingly affordable electric cars. California-based Tesla designs and manufactures EVs, as well as EV powertrain components for partners such as Toyota and Daimler.
About Model S
Model S is the world’s first premium sedan built from the ground up as an electric vehicle, meticulously designed and engineered to elevate the public’s expectations of what a car can be. At the heart of Model S is the proven Tesla powertrain, delivering both unprecedented range and a thrilling drive experience. With a rigid body structure, nearly 50/50 weight distribution and a remarkably low center of gravity, Model S offers the responsiveness and agility expected from world’s best sports cars while providing the ride quality of a premium sedan.
Setting the bar for electric driving range, Model S offers 60 kWh and 85 kWh battery options, delivering unprecedented range of up to 500 km (on the NEDC drive cycle) with the 85 kWh variant. Both batteries are contained within the same enclosure, integrating with the vehicle in the same way, providing structural, aerodynamic, and handling advantages. The batteries use automotive-grade lithium-ion cells arranged for optimum energy density, thermal management, and safety.
Without an internal combustion engine or transmission tunnel, the interior of Model S has more cargo space than any other sedan in its class and includes a second trunk under the hood. The interior features a 17” in-dash touchscreen with Internet capabilities.
About Model X
Model X is designed from the ground up to blend the best of an SUV with the benefits of a minivan, as only an electric vehicle can. It is an automobile above category, built around the driver—and six friends. It artfully combines unequalled performance with brilliant functionality.
Model X is a family vehicle with performance roots. The Tesla Vehicle Platform enables Model X to perform in ways never expected from a car of its size. With a center of gravity lower than any other SUV, you’ll notice nimble reflexes at every turn. The electric powertrain delivers instant torque for confident lane changes, even when loaded with seven adults and all their gear.
Model X is offered with optional Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive. The second motor enables more than all-weather, all-road capabilities: it increases torque by 50%.
