The purpose of the Tesla Materials
Engineering organization is to facilitate the Tesla mission of accelerating the
world to sustainable transportation via identification, development and
insertion of advanced materials and processes while supporting other Tesla
Engineering and Manufacturing functions with materials expertise.
Role:
The Materials Engineering team is
seeking an Adhesives Engineer to support material applications for on-going
processes, material changes, and new material introductions at our Tesla Factory
in Berlin. This role will also represent
Tesla Materials Engineering in dealing with our local material suppliers in Europe. This position will reside at the Tesla
factory in Berlin but will report to the corporate Materials Engineering team
in Fremont, California, USA.
Responsibilities:
- Primary source for adhesive materials
expertise, information, and analysis at the Tesla Factory – Berlin.
- Support on-going material application
processes for adhesives and sealers including body and paint shop adhesives and
sealers, battery enclosure adhesives and sealers and battery module assembly
adhesives.
- Work with the manufacturing
teams to ensure processes are robust and optimized.
- Provide technical support to the
quality teams with respect to potential material non-compliances.
- Support process validation for all new
processes or materials.
- Develop new material strategies for
lower cost manufacturing with improved quality.
- Advise the broader Materials
Engineering Team on how we can make better materials for manufacturing.
- Represent Tesla when dealing with local
material suppliers in Europe.
- Manage material approvals for local
material suppliers in Europe.
Requirements:
- Polymer or Materials Engineering
degree. Advanced degrees or equivalent experience preferred.
- Fundamental knowledge of polymers
and polymer chemistry as they relate to adhesives. Thorough understating of surface chemistry
and it’s relationship to adhesion. Knowledge
of basic adhesive chemistries (epoxy, polyurethane, acrylic, silicone, etc.)
- 5 to10 years + experience working
in a manufacturing facility (process engineer, quality engineer, or other
position directly related to manufacturing).
Experience at an adhesives manufacturer or automotive OEM (adhesives
role) is desired.
- Experience with standard analytical
tools (FTIR, DSC, Rheometry, DMA, etc.)
- Thorough knowledge of coating processes
and their relationships to material properties.
- Strong communication and
organizational skills with ability to manage projects independently
- Fluent language skills in German and English are required.
