The role
Tesla is committed to hiring and developing diverse talent in all disciplines. This Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for first principles evaluation of manufacturing issues and shepherding designs into viable products, utilizing using local and international multi-sourcing strategies. Responsibilities
- Full life cycle mechanical part design ownership including conception, analysis, 3D CAD design and BOM management
- Create prototypes and support development of manufacturing processes and automation
- Drive cross functional collaboration with CAE engineers, manufacturing engineers, suppliers, and test engineers to transition conceptual designs to production
- Complete detailed assembly level tolerance analysis and produce the associated 2D drawings using GD&T for release to suppliers
- Conduct DFMEA and Fault Tree analysis
- Conduct root cause analysis for design, manufacturing, and field issues
- Author documentation and requirements and deliver technical presentations
- Research and benchmark competitive technologies
Requirements
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) and preferably M.S. if work experience is limited
- Experience or working familiarity with most items listed above in ‘Responsibility’
- Deep experience in hands-on prototyping
- Knowledge of material properties and applications
- Strong communication and a team mentality
- Understanding of how to design for high volume manufacturing processes including stamping, drawing, injection molding, precision sheet metal, die cutting, metal welding
Skills that are a plus
- Familiarity with Lithium-ion cells, module and battery pack design
- Experience in mass production with automated assembly
- Making or modifying parts in a machine shop
- Data acquisition and test equipment
- Structural finite element analysis
