Home Charging Installation
Most Tesla drivers choose to charge their car at home, overnight. To charge at home, Tesla recommends installing a Wall Connector near your parking space. Plug in when you get home and wake up to a full charge every morning.
How do I install home charging equipment?
There are three main steps:
1. Purchase Tesla Wall Connector
This can be purchased at our Service Centers for 2,100.00 AED.
2. Schedule an electrician site visit
As every location is different, a qualified electrician can provide a quotation by visiting the site. Tesla has a network of recommended electricians who perform the first site visit at no cost. If you plan to use your local electrician, make them aware of the installation manuals, available in all local languages.
3. Schedule the installation prior to delivery
Once you approve the quotation, the installation can be scheduled. We recommend scheduling installation as soon as possible, as delivery dates can vary.
How fast can I charge at home?
Maximum charge rate depends on three components. The component that can channel the least power determines the maximum charge rate. We call this the “slowest link”.
Grid connection at your home
Most homes in United Arab Emirates allow a maximum charge rate of 11 kW or 44 to 64 km/h. This is more than sufficient for overnight charging. An electrician can determine the available power at your home during a site visit and set your Wall Connector accordingly.
Tesla Wall Connector
The maximum power output of the Wall Connector is 22 kW, meaning it is never the slowest link of the home charging installation.
The onboard charger, which is built into your car, has a maximum rate at which it can deliver energy to the battery.* Different Tesla cars have different onboard charger capabilities.
|Your Tesla||Capacity on-board charger (kW)*||Maximum added range|
|Model 3||11||65 km/h|
|Model S/ Model X||16.5||65-85 km/h|
|Model S before May 2016||11 or 22
Check order configuration
|11: 50 km/h
22: 100 km/h
* Supercharging is not limited to these charge rates, as it bypasses the onboard charger inside the car.
Frequently Asked Questions
What percentage should I charge the battery to?
Adjust the charge percentage of the battery in the settings menu on your touchscreen. For regular use, we recommend keeping your car set within the 'Daily' range bracket, up to approximately 90%. Charging to 100% is best saved for when taking a longer trip.
Should I wait for the battery to fully deplete before charging?
Tesla uses lithium ion batteries so there is no memory effect. This means there is no need to deplete the battery before charging. We recommend plugging in as often as possible.
How long does it take to charge a Tesla?
Charging time depends on the power source, the charging connector and the car. An electrician can determine the available power at your home during a site visit. Find the charge rate for new Tesla cars at various power levels in the table below.
|charge rate||Range added per hour* (Km/h)|
|kW||Model 3||Model S||Model X|
* Please be aware that charge rates can be influenced by external factors (state of charge, extreme temperatures)
Home charging solutions
Do I have to install a Tesla Wall Connector?
The Wall Connector is our recommended home charging solution, as it provides the most convenience and the fastest charging speeds. However, a Tesla can also be charged at universal Type 2 charging stations.
Can I use a normal household outlet to charge?
Yes. A domestic adapter is included as standard equipment with all new Tesla cars. This provides approximately 10-14 km of range per hour of charge, depending on the car. For the best home charging experience, we recommend installing a Wall Connector.
Can I use an industrial outlet for charging at home?
The Mobile Connector with an industrial adapter can be used to charge single phase at home. The blue industrial adapter rated at 3.7kW (16A) comes standard with the car. The 7.4 kW (32A) blue adapter will still be available but as an accessory in Tesla Service Centers. For more info, check out the Charging Connectors page.
How can I track my energy usage for accounting purposes?
The Tesla Wall Connector does not have a certified meter to allow for accounting purposes. If you require this functionality, you can install an MID-certified meter in front of the charge point or look into universal Type 2 charge points. Your local certified electrician can consult on the most convenient charging solution matching your needs.
How much does installing Tesla home charging equipment cost?
Cost varies depending on the local circumstances. You may want to get multiple installation quotes. Tesla provides a list of recommended electricians in your area who can provide you a quote based on a free site visit.
I have two Tesla cars. What is the best option for charging both at the same time?
Installing two Wall Connectors configured for power sharing would be the best option. The Wall Connector is equipped to facilitate load sharing for up to four connectors. Check the video and installation manual for more information on power sharing capabilities.
Which RCD should I use with my installation?
The standards for installing charge points state that every individual connector should be protected with an RCD that protects against direct current leaking. The Tesla Wall Connector does not measure DC current leaking, so an RCD Type B or a specific Type A-EV needs to be installed. National regulations can change so always check with your local certified electrician.
Supercharging and Destination Charging
Why is Supercharging so much faster than charging at home?
Superchargers skip the onboard charger of the vehicle, providing up to 120kW of direct current (DC) power directly to the battery. This level of power requires dedicated transformers and utility connections, which are not available in residential locations.
Can I just use a local Supercharger and skip charging at home?
The best charging experience will always come from charging at home and this often costs less than Supercharging. Check the Supercharging support page for more information on usage and the price per kWh.
What is Destination Charging?
We work with shopping centers, hotels, sport clubs and other hospitality based locations to install Wall Connectors to enable charging when away from home. Learn more about Destination Charging.
