Warranty Adjustment Program: Touchscreen Component – 8GB embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) in Media Control Unit (MCU)

Tesla is committed to building the highest quality products as we accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. For customer peace of mind, we are providing additional coverage on some Model S and Model X vehicles built before March 2018 that are equipped with an 8GB embedded MultiMediaCard (“8GB eMMC”) in the media control unit. We are aware that this component may malfunction due to accumulated wear. If this occurs, it could result in a blank or intermittently blank center display, or an alert indicating that a memory storage device has degraded and to contact Service. This condition has no impact on basic vehicle driving functionality and controllability, and we are not aware of any injuries or collisions relating to it.

If this condition occurs in affected vehicles within 8 years starting from the date the vehicle was first put into service or delivered by Tesla to the first purchaser/lessor, and the vehicle has less than 160,000 total odometer kilometers (“Warranty Adjustment Program period”), then Tesla will repair or replace the 8GB eMMC free of charge at any Tesla Service Center during the Warranty Adjustment Program period pursuant to the terms and conditions of the original Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty. Tesla will also repair or replace any eMMC replaced under this Warranty Adjustment Program for the same condition during the Warranty Adjustment Program period.

The Warranty Adjustment Program applies only to Model S and Model X vehicles built before March 2018. Model S and Model X vehicles built during and after March 2018, as well as all Infotainment Upgrades, are not equipped with the 8GB eMMC, and parts other than the 8GB eMMC are not included in this Warranty Adjustment Program. Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the part and condition described above is not covered under this Warranty Adjustment Program.

If you own a Model S or Model X vehicle affected by this Warranty Adjustment Program, there is no immediate action you need to take at this time, and you may continue to drive your vehicle. For the best experience, please ensure that your Tesla is running its most current software version.

If you previously paid for any repairs for the specific part and condition described in this notice, you may be eligible for reimbursement subject to certain terms and conditions. Within 90 days, Tesla will send you an additional notice that details reimbursement eligibility, terms and conditions, and how to request reimbursement. Please be aware that any repair conducted for the part and condition described above at a non-Tesla service provider more than 10 calendar days after the date of this notice is not eligible for reimbursement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this issue and how does it affect my vehicle?
We are aware of malfunctions in some of our older media control units (MCUs) due to accumulated wear on the 8GB embedded MultiMediaCard (eMMC) in Model S and Model X vehicles built before March 2018. The eMMC supports the vehicle’s center display, and a malfunction in the 8GB eMMC might result in a blank or intermittently blank center display and/or a vehicle alert signaling memory storage device degradation.

There is no risk to vehicle drivability if the eMMC malfunctions, including no effect on acceleration, braking or steering, but you may lose access to features that are available through the vehicle’s center display.

What vehicles does this affect?
Model S and Model X vehicles built before March 2018 might experience issues related to a malfunctioning eMMC due to accumulated wear.

What vehicles are covered under this Warranty Adjustment Program?
This Warranty Adjustment Program covers all vehicles globally that are equipped with the 8GB eMMC for 8 years from the date of delivery to its original owner or 160,000 total odometer kilometers, whichever comes first (the “Warranty Adjustment Program period”), subject to the terms of the original Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty. To be eligible for the Warranty Adjustment Program, your vehicle’s 8GB eMMC must be experiencing a malfunction due to accumulated wear during the Warranty Adjustment Program period. A vehicle inspection and diagnosis by Tesla Service, upon experiencing the symptoms outlined above, can confirm your vehicle’s eligibility.

Is Tesla offering to repair or replace this component?
Yes. Tesla will diagnose your vehicle to determine if the 8GB eMMC is malfunctioning due to accumulated wear and whether to repair or replace the component. If Tesla determines that the 8GB eMMC requires replacement due to the condition, Tesla will replace this component, free of charge, with an enhanced, 64GB eMMC to restore original functionality of the touchscreen. Post replacement, the vehicle will retain a NVIDIA® Tegra® infotainment processor.

Diagnosis or repair for conditions other than the part and condition described above are not covered under this program. Diagnosis and repairs qualifying under this Warranty Adjustment Program must be performed by Tesla, except for prior repairs that are eligible for reimbursement (please see the question below for more information).

Is this the same service procedure as Tesla’s Infotainment Upgrade?
No. Installation of a 64GB eMMC retains the vehicle’s NVIDIA® Tegra® infotainment processor; this is the only service procedure covered as part of this Warranty Adjustment Program and is separate from the Infotainment Upgrade. The Infotainment Upgrade converts the infotainment processor to Intel Atom® and involves the replacement of other components.

Is this a recall?
No. This is not a recall. This condition has no impact on basic vehicle driving functionality and controllability, and we are not aware of any injuries or collisions relating to this condition for the 8GB eMMC.

I received a notice that my vehicle is subject to this program. What do I do next?
If you are the registered owner, there is no immediate action you need to take at this time, and you may continue to drive your vehicle. Please do not schedule a Tesla Service appointment based on notice of this program unless you are actively experiencing the condition covered by the Warranty Adjustment Program.

For the best experience, we recommend running the most current software available for your vehicle. Please refer to “Software Updates” in your Owner’s Manual.

My vehicle is covered, but my center touchscreen works at this time. Can I get a repair done now before the eMMC malfunctions?
No. Not all eMMC will malfunction due to accumulated wear during the Warranty Adjustment Period. Only vehicles that experience malfunctions of the eMMC due to accumulated wear during the Warranty Adjustment Program period are covered under this program and are eligible for repair or replacement.

I paid to repair or replace my MCU due to the condition described in the program. Can I be reimbursed?
If you previously paid for a repair for the specific part and condition covered by the program and the paid repair was within the Warranty Adjustment Program period, you may be eligible for a refund subject to certain terms and conditions.

We will contact owners of affected vehicles with more information on reimbursement eligibility, terms and conditions, and how to request reimbursements by or before February 2021.

What if my vehicle experiences this condition and the Warranty Adjustment Program period has already ended?
If your vehicle experiences this condition and the Warranty Adjustment Program period has already ended, the repair will not be covered by Tesla and will be your responsibility.

The cost of this repair at a Tesla Service Center is currently around AED 438 in parts (subject to change) and about 1-1.5 hours of labor, plus applicable taxes and fees based on your location.

I opted to purchase the Infotainment Upgrade, will I receive reimbursement from Tesla? 
If you paid for Tesla’s Infotainment Upgrade after Tesla Service diagnosed that your vehicle’s eMMC was malfunctioning due to accumulated wear, you may be eligible for reimbursement up to the cost of the 8GB eMMC repair available at the time of your upgrade.

More information on reimbursement eligibility, terms and conditions, and how to request reimbursements will be available by or before February 2021.
