Tesla is offering South Australian customers a special rate of $6,999 for Powerwall and supporting hardware, plus installation; this is inclusive of GST and includes the home battery scheme rebate. With the offer, your Tesla Powerwall and solar will support a brand-new type of energy plan that offers greater energy bill savings. To access the special rate for Powerwall, you must also sign up to the Tesla Energy Plan.

Our plan removes the daily supply charge, providing $300 of savings per year on average, and offers the lowest energy usage rate available in the market at 31.13c/kWh incl. GST. (with a saving of 32% from the reference price*) and still provides a feed-in tariff for your solar exports.

The plan is administered by Tesla’s authorised retail partner, Energy Locals, and connects your solar system and Powerwall to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) where energy produced by your system can be used by your home and also exported back to the grid, to benefit both you and the community.

What are the key benefits of this offer?

How can you not charge a daily supply charge?

The traditional electricity retail model is becoming increasingly reliant on the daily supply charge, a fixed cost irrespective of how much or how little energy you actually consume.

The Tesla Energy Plan works by connecting your solar and Powerwall with a network of other solar and Powerwall owners, all working together as a VPP to provide essential grid services. Tesla’s optimisation software will operate your battery and solar in the most efficient way, so that we can use this energy where it is needed most and offer you the best energy plan – one with no daily supply charge.



How much will I save?

Offering customers Powerwall from $6,999 plus installation, the Tesla Energy Plan provides significant upfront savings on the cost of purchasing Powerwall as well as longer term energy bill savings.

With a $0 daily supply charge and lowest generally available usage rate, we also expect customers to save $300 per year on average, in addition to the upfront Powerwall savings when compared to the Default Market Offer.

What is the expected payback period (return on investment)?

The Tesla Energy Plan offers value for customers looking to purchase Powerwall as it also unlocks an energy plan that has been specifically designed to maximise the value of your system.

Based on a typical customer load profile, the payback period has previously been between 8 to 10 years for customers purchasing Powerwall independently. Under the Tesla Energy Plan offer, customers can now expect payback periods starting from as low as 7 years*.

*Note that payback periods are dependent on your total (and time of) usage. This payback is based on a customer bill comparison with the Default Market Offer.


How is the offer different to South Australia’s Home Battery Scheme?

This offer compliments the South Australian Home Battery Scheme and subsidy support available (where SA Government is providing up to $2,700 off the upfront cost) when purchasing your Tesla Powerwall. All prices referenced already factor in this subsidy.


How is the Government subsidy administered?

The South Australian Government is working with Australian peer-to-peer lender, RateSetter, to administer the subsidy through its Home Battery Scheme. Should you accept a quote for Powerwall, Tesla will provide you with a link to the RateSetter website where the subsidy will be applied, and where you can apply for financing if required. This can be done over the phone or online. The Government subsidy is taken off the cost of Powerwall and given to Tesla once the system is installed.



Am I eligible for this new offer?

You are eligible if you are a resident of South Australia.


What is the sign-up process?

  1. Complete your Powerwall purchase agreement
  2. Sign up to Energy Locals at the same time. Note: please use the same email address during onsite commissioning.
  3. 10 business day cooling off period starts
  4. Cooling off period ends
    1. For customers with a smart meter already, Energy Locals market transfer process occurs within 1 Business Day.
    2. For customers without a smart meter, special meter read is requested immediately for all customers and occurs within 3-5 Business Days. All customers who need a smart meter will have their upgrade completed by Energy Locals within 15-20 business Days of transfer (assuming no additional works required).
  5. Your transfer to Energy Locals is complete
  6. Powerwall installation is complete (4-6 weeks from sign up)
  7. Powerwall is enrolled into the Tesla Energy Plan and is able to provide grid services and generate ongoing benefits to you and the community.

I already have solar and Powerwall. What’s next?

You can transfer onto the Tesla Energy Plan straight away. As per the Tesla Energy Plan’s Terms and Conditions, if your system is properly functioning, maintained and is connected to the internet (ideally through Wi-Fi or an ethernet connection), you can make a simple switch by signing up to the Tesla Energy Plan today. If you do not already have a smart meter, this will be managed during your transfer.

Only Powerwall 2 is eligible to join a VPP. Powerwall 1 is not compatible.


What if I don’t have solar panels or want to purchase more?

To be eligible for the Tesla Energy Plan, you must have both a solar PV and Powerwall system fully installed. We are happy to provide you with a quote for both solar and Powerwall. Households with existing solar systems will be able to purchase new or additional solar panels when purchasing Powerwall.


Do I have to own a Powerwall to join the energy plan?

Yes. The Tesla Energy Plan is a brand-new type of energy program that combines Tesla’s world leading hardware and software.

All customers signing up to the plan must have purchased or purchase a new a Powerwall battery system and solar PV to join the energy plan. For customers who are awaiting the installation of their system, sign up to the Tesla Energy Plan with Energy Locals and we’ll complete the retailer transfer process once your system is installed.

SA VPP customers currently participating in the Phase I and II trials are not eligible to sign up to the Tesla Energy Plan, as they do not own their own system. The benefits they receive include a market leading electricity consumption rate, enabled by the installation of a Powerwall and solar system installed at their property free of charge.


What does the installation process entail?

Installation Labour: This encompasses not only on site works, but also system design and behind the scenes administration work to be carried out, by the Tesla Installation Team. This includes, but is not limited to; drawing up and invoicing any sales agreements, fully tailored system design by our in house Clean Energy Council accredited designer, submitting an application to your electricity network on your behalf, and coordinating our contracted Tesla Certified Installers for both the site inspection and installation (which is usually 2 electricians for 1 -2 day at your premises) . Please note, that our Tesla Certified Installers have had to undertake specialized training for this work, and are required to continually perform updated training for not only this work, but for all electrical work. Included within their training is all of the legal regulatory testing and compliance in accordance with Australian Standards.

Installation Hardware: This is for the additional hardware, circuitry and switchgear associated with Powerwall and its associated equipment (Backup Gateway 2 and Tesla Metering). This is not limited to conduit, CT clamps, metering equipment and internet networking, which is essential to a Powerwall installation, regardless of its complexity. This does not include any necessary electrical upgrades, permit fees, logistics/travel costs, or any retailer/connection charges that may be applicable.

Shipping: This refers to the cost involved in not only shipping your Powerwall unit from our Tesla Gigafactory in Nevada, USA, but also the other logistical and warehousing costs associated with an installation. There are necessary safety precautions required for transporting and handling of your battery from Nevada, USA to your house, and we ensure we are fully compliant with state and national codes related to safe battery transportation.

Permitting and/or Inspection: This is the cost incurred in applying to your Distribution Network Service Provider for installation approval.


What happens if Powerwall can't be installed at my property?

To be eligible for the Tesla Energy Plan you require a fully installed solar and Powerwall system. If you initially sign-up to the plan, but then subsequently find out that your Powerwall installation cannot proceed for any reason, your Powerwall and Tesla Energy Plan contracts will be cancelled as per the Terms and Conditions and you will remain with your existing retailer.


Do I need a smart meter?

To be eligible for the Tesla Energy Plan you require a smart meter which will be managed during your transfer to Energy Locals if you do not already have one at your property. The cost of the meter upgrade is covered in the offer, however if any additional electrical works are required to make the property compliant, this cost will be borne by customer.


What if I rent my home? Can I still access this offer?

Yes. You don’t have to own the home to access the Tesla Energy Plan. However, you will need to obtain approval from the property owner to have a Powerwall and solar system installed and be able to demonstrate the property owner’s consent to Tesla prior to installation. You will not be able to remove the Powerwall should you move out of the property.


Will I lose my feed-in tariff on my existing solar system?

In addition to a $0 daily supply charge, the offer also provides a generous solar feed-in-tariff of $0.10/kWh, plus the lowest generally available energy rate in South Australia.

Customers should note that when switching to this plan you will transition away from any retail incentives provided by your current retailer – including any feed-in-tariff being provided, including government sponsored feed-in-tariffs. Your eligibility to receive existing feed-in credits will cease from the date of your application for approval to connect the home battery system is submitted to SA Power Networks.

*Lowest generally available energy usage rate in South Australia as at August 2019.


I’ve just signed up to a retailer, can I switch to this plan now?

Yes, you can. If your house has a solar system and Powerwall fully installed, or if you purchase one through Tesla or another supplier, you are eligible for this energy plan. The standard 10 business day cooling off period applies between retailers, and Energy Locals will manage the switch for you.


Does this offer allow me to live off the grid?

No. A requirement of the South Australian Government subsidy scheme is that all batteries, including Tesla Powerwalls, are capable of being part of a Virtual Power Plant. For this reason, your home needs to be connected to the SA Power Network’s electricity network.


What happens if I sign up now but then want to leave later? Are there penalties?

If you are purchasing a special price Powerwall as part of signing up to the Tesla Energy Plan, Tesla may choose to apply an early termination charge (up to $1200) should you seek to leave the Tesla Energy Plan within 12 months. So long as you stay on the Tesla Energy Plan for 12 months, you will not incur any termination charge.

The Early Termination Charge is calculated in accordance with the following formula:

Early Termination Charge payable = $100 x the number of months remaining in the Minimum Term

(Minimum Term is 12 months; so maximum Early Termination Charge payable is $1200)

It’s important to remember the Tesla Energy Plan has been specifically designed to maximise the value of your Powerwall and we’re confident that our plan has been tailored to offer the greatest benefit for you. If you want to change your offer or move to a different energy retailer for whatever reason beyond the minimum contract term of 12 months, there will be no exit fees or contract lock-ins.

There are no exit fees or contract lock-ins that will apply to Tesla Energy Plan for customers that have existing Powerwalls at sign-up.



What is a Virtual Power Plant (VPP)?

A Virtual Power Plant is created by a network of homes with solar panels and battery storage systems all working together to generate, store and feed energy back into the grid.

Typically, energy from a home’s solar panels and battery system mainly provides electricity for the house on which it is installed, with any excess energy sent to the grid when it’s not being used. However, energy generated and stored by the system can also be used to provide essential grid services, at specific times when the network needs it the most. Tesla can aggregate your system with others and coordinate these services as a VPP to help power South Australia and therefore benefit the wider community – including your friends and family.


How will Tesla manage my Powerwall and solar system?

The aim of the Virtual Power Plant is to maximise the value of your solar and Powerwall system and to help stabilise the grid to prevent outages in your community. This means Tesla will be accessing the energy in your Powerwall to optimise it for every minute of the day, so that we can use this energy where it is needed most and as a result, offer you the best energy plan.

All of the VPP operations will be seamlessly controlled using Tesla’s world-leading optimisation software, so you can sit back and enjoy savings on your energy bill.

Your Powerwall and solar operate differently to individual operation (i.e. if you were not part of a virtual power plant). Tesla’s optimisation software may direct your solar or battery to:

  1. Export energy to the grid
  2. Import energy from the grid
  3. Maintain constant battery charge

By allowing your battery to be flexible as part of the Virtual Power Plant, you are helping the grid be more resilient, which benefits everyone in South Australia.

How will Tesla manage grid exports?

Your system will behave differently compared to regular operation. The Tesla Energy Plan creates value from both energy arbitrage (a buy energy low, sell high method) as well as frequency support, helping to smooth out fluctuations in the grid. Tesla shares this value with customers through the upfront Powerwall discount, $0 daily supply charge and via the best energy rate in South Australia*. 

Tesla’s VPP algorithm is constantly assessing the best action to participate in the energy market and minimise grid fluctuations by: 

  1. Charging your Powerwall from the grid
  2. Exporting solar or stored energy from Powerwall to the grid
  3. Holding the battery constant in standby mode. 

For example: 

  1. If there is an oversupply of electricity in the grid (e.g. during off-peak times) Tesla may charge your battery or import energy from the grid to take advantage of low or negative wholesale prices and cover your home’s energy load.
  2. If there is an undersupply of energy in the grid (e.g. during peak times or unexpected outages) Tesla may export your solar system or Powerwall’s energy to the grid to take advantage of high wholesale prices or to help stabilize the network.
  3. If there is a forecasted grid event (e.g. grid outage) Tesla may charge your battery from the grid and supply back later to help stabilise it. Alternatively, your Powerwall may export energy so it can be charged to full capacity later.

How will Tesla manage grid imports?

As with grid exports, grid importing under the VPP has been designed to maximise value delivered by your system.

Customers may need to import from the grid to their home when energy from the solar and battery is insufficient. Grid imports are charged at the lowest available energy rate in the market, at 31.13c/kWh inc. GST. Grid imports may increase slightly as part of a VPP, but customers will still receive over $300 of savings per year on average due to the $0 daily supply charge.

During times of grid events, your battery may also import energy from the grid to charge your battery. As this will be over and above the requirements needed to cover your ordinary household consumption, you will see a grid charging adjustment on your next bill to compensate you for this flexibility in helping the grid. Our objective is to pay you back for any grid imports we’ve used to charge the battery so you’re no worse off. We make sure the calculation is always in your favour.

This benefit is split across two items in the bill:

  1. Firstly, we pay you 22.63c/kWh through the “grid charging credit”.
  2. You also receive 10c/kWh when we export this energy back to the grid.
  3. Together, these add to 32.63c/kWh total, slightly more than your “anytime peak” usage rate.

This assumes all grid charging is then exported back to the grid. Sometimes energy from grid charging is used to power your home, in which case you are better off than importing from the grid.


What happens when my battery charge is kept constant?

Rather than charging or discharging, your battery may hold its charge steady in ‘standby mode’. Tesla’s optimisation software is assessing your home needs as well as those of the grid to determine the next action.


What happens during times of grid outage?

Individual Powerwalls have back-up capability as a standard feature to ensure a seamless transition to keep your lights on when there is a grid outage. As part of the Tesla Energy Plan, we will set your reserve up to 20% of the energy capacity in your Powerwall as back-up. This level of energy reserve provides the typical customer with 2 hours of power. You can call Tesla and request this value be set lower to get the maximum value from your solar system.

Your Powerwall as part of the VPP may be called upon to provide support to the grid if an outage is likely, actively helping to improve grid stability. If there is a blackout, your system will disconnect from the grid and you will have your stored energy, and any solar energy generating, to power your home when you need it.


What will I see in my Tesla App?

As part of the Virtual Power Plant your Powerwall will be in a special operating mode that allows it to support the grid as well as your property. Energy from the solar and battery system needs to be available in order for Tesla to operate your solar and battery in the most efficient way, so customisations to battery settings won’t be accessible. You will still be able to track your energy usage and monitor power flows in the Tesla App in real-time.

What is the Powerwall warranty period?

Tesla’s standard warranty applies: we guarantee 70% energy capacity at the end of 10 years. Tesla closely manages the amount of charging and discharging your Powerwall does to keep it operating within warranty guidelines. Tesla’s warranty policy will be provided with your Tesla Energy Plan contract.


What is the data policy for this offer?

As your retailer, Energy Locals takes your privacy seriously and has published a Privacy Policy that outlines exactly how they will collect, store, use and disclose personal information.  


How is Tesla involved?

This is a Tesla-led and designed offer that integrates Tesla’s leading sustainable energy storage products with an innovative retail energy plan. Building on its world-leading Powerwall battery technology, Tesla is now looking to empower customers even further – using software to optimise the performance of your solar and Powerwall battery system so that you can save even more, whilst also providing renewable energy back to your local community when needed most.

Tesla is working with authorised retailer Energy Locals to keep your bills simple and transparent.


How is Energy Locals involved?

Energy Locals will provide all the energy retail services, including account management and friendly customer support. Energy Locals is an Australian clean energy provider that offers a fixed retail margin to make energy cheaper and fairer.


How is the government involved?

The South Australian Government is supporting the trial phases of the VPP through a $2 million grant and a $20 million loan from the Renewable Technology Fund.
