Home Charging Installation

We recommend charging your Tesla vehicle overnight, just like your mobile phone. Pull into your garage, plug in, and you will wake up to a full charge the next morning. Even better, electricity will only be a fraction of the cost of gasoline.

To prepare your home for charging, hire an electrician to install a dedicated circuit conveniently near where you will park your Tesla vehicle. The charge port is located in the driver side rear taillight. Follow the links below to learn more about Tesla charging:

Standard Equipment

Model S and Model X include the following charging accessories as standard equipment:

  • Mobile Connector (20 feet)
  • Adapter for standard 120 volt household outlets (NEMA 5-15)
  • Adapter for higher power 240 volt outlet (NEMA 14-50)
  • Adapter for public charging stations (SAE J1772)

The Mobile Connector and adapters are used to plug into various types of electrical outlets and can provide a maximum of 32 amps to a vehicle. Your delivery orientation specialist will review this hardware with you when you pick up your vehicle. To charge with the standard equipment, install a 240 volt NEMA 14-50 outlet at home.

Optional Charging Accessories

Optional charging accessories for Model S and Model X can be purchased from Tesla's online shop.
The most popular charging accessory is the Wall Connector, a charging station uniquely designed for Tesla vehicles. The Wall Connector can accommodate almost any power supply and allows for the fastest possible home charging.

Available in two cable lengths:

Review the one page Wall Connector overview to learn more about its features.

Note: Tesla owners in Ontario and Québec are encouraged to purchase Wall Connectors directly from the local Tesla service center to be eligible for charging installation incentives.

Vehicle On-Board Charger

Tesla vehicles have two on-board charger options. The standard charger is capable of 48 amps and the upgraded High Amperage Charger is capable of 72 amps.

The Mobile Connector is limited to 32 amps, regardless of on-board charger choice. To maximize your charging speed at home, install a Wall Connector for the fastest possible home charging.

Installing Charging Equipment at Home

When preparing to charge at home, there are two primary options Tesla owners choose from:

The charge port on all Tesla vehicles is located on the rear, driver side of the vehicle. Install charging equipment so that it can conveniently reach the charge port:

The Mobile Connector has one cable length (20') and the Wall Connector has two cable length options (8.5' or 24'). Contact the home charging team if you need additional assistance or guidance.

Hiring an Electrician

A licensed electrician will need to visit your home to provide a quote for charging equipment installation. Cost of installation will vary by location, cost can range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the scope of work. Some homes may require service panel upgrades or trenching to install home charging equipment, increasing the cost. Like any home improvement project, you may want to have 2 or 3 electricians provide a quote for your installation.

If you have a trusted electrician who is familiar with your home's electrical system, you are welcome to contact them for installation assistance.

Multi-Unit Properties

Begin talking with property management about your intent to purchase a plug-in vehicle as early as possible. Ask if any of the neighbors have expressed similar interest, or if they have plans to add charging infrastructure to the building. Below you will find two documents to assist with requesting charging installation from your building management. The first document is a templated letter that can be tailored to your specific property. The second is a presentation to show the benefits and process of installing charging.

The installation of charging equipment is a value-adding property upgrade for any apartment or condo community and will help retain and attract energy conscious high-value tenants. Load sharing with multiple Wall Connectors

Up to four Tesla Wall Connectors can be linked together to intelligently share power from a single circuit breaker. This functionality is beneficial for homes or commercial locations which need to charge more than one Tesla vehicle at the same time, but may not have enough power for multiple electrical circuits. For this type of installation, an electrician can provide a distribution box to split power between multiple Wall Connectors and install a communication cable which enables the units to operate as a network. This allows one station to provide maximum power to a single vehicle, or to split power when more than one Tesla is plugged in. To maximize charging speed we recommend installing the largest circuit breaker possible for the electrical panel, up to 100 amps.
