First, let me come clean and tell you the honest truth; I am a petrol-head. Well, I used to be! Like many boys, I spent my youth dreaming of fast, flashy supercars with big roar driven by celebrities and superheroes. Fast-forward a few years, and I was graduating with an economics degree from M.I.T. Having spent four years amidst a sea of engineering majors, my inner-geek was well awakened and my love for sports cars fully fueled.

Boys with toys
I lived to work, and I worked to buy supercars. The sensations of torque, impressive speed, luxury finishes gave me a sense of accomplishment and dreams fulfilled. I loved keeping up with anything new coming into the market, and fast was my currency.
One day, the Tesla Roadster popped-up on my radar. I had known of the company for a while, and as an asset manager I had handled Tesla stock during its early years. Dutifully following my curiosity and pursuit for faster speeds, I promptly went on a test drive. The Roadster had a smooth and powerful acceleration that could only be attributed to its electric nature. I couldn’t wait to add it to my modest collection of cars, but there was one small problem. I had grown to a decent stature and the Roadster only came in one size.
Geeks have more fun
When the Model S was announced, I didn’t miss a beat. I immediately built it, ordered it, and paid for it online. The direct-buying experience was extremely different from a dealership purchase. But once I did it, I loved it – it was so simple. In September 2015, my girlfriend Lina and I went to pick-up my new Model S. Quality standards were in-line with other high-end sedans I owned, in terms of having a luxurious feel and offering its own unique experience. So much so, that driving around at first, felt a bit eerie. There was no on/off button, virtually no running noise and it felt like I was driving in the future, gliding around town.

Having driven gas-guzzlers all of my life, I was naturally addicted to all of the attributes of a gas run engine; there was nothing more powerful. Yet suddenly, I had faster acceleration with absolutely no noise, my usual creature comforts plus additional cool features and monumentally lowered maintenance costs, all in a beautiful looking electric vehicle (EV). I found myself really enjoying the serene ride to/from work, especially being in a job where it’s constantly loud. Taking one of the other cars no longer gave me the same satisfaction.

I used to think that going bigger would always require more, but now I believe that we can live a full life by simply evolving the way we consume things we enjoy. Tesla has really done this for me, and my love for speedy cars. It was also Lina who educated me on the necessity for sustainable energy solutions and made me a believer. She has been my constant supporter throughout my transformation, and whom I now proudly call my wife.
Days of supercar motoring, fossil fuel binging and CO2 dumping are behind me, and my new dream of influencing sustainable choices and leaving a clean world for our children, has begun. I now live by one of Lina and I’s favorite quotes by renowned environmentalist Robert Swan OBE, “the greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it”. We must be active role models to our peers and future generations alike, and show them how to consume responsibly.

As a testament of this, I have made a promise to myself and my wife to go all-electric by 2017. I’m even considering selling the Lambo,…my friends don’t believe me (yet!).
Live the vision
We have big news! We have ordered our Model X! I am also personally looking forward to the Model 3 release, as I want to gift it to my wife who recently got her driver’s license. She continues to inspire me and she is currently pursuing a PhD at Cambridge University in the areas of environmental studies and sustainable watershed management. I am also happy to share, that Lina now carries a baby on-board. I am the happiest man alive.
Imminent change is coming and with great visionaries and dreamers like Elon Musk at the wheel, sustainable energy solutions, lowered carbon footprinting and responsible energy consumption is going to become the day-to-day standard. We want to start the revolution together and challenge you to join us, and contribute to ensuring future generations have the opportunity to live out their dreams.
We can’t wait to welcome our daughter into a better world.
PS. Pre-ordered a Radio Flyer Model S for my baby girl!
