Home charging installation

We recommend charging your Tesla vehicle overnight, just like your mobile phone. Pull into your parking space, plug in, and you will wake up to a full charge the next morning. Even better, electricity will only be a fraction of the cost of gasoline.

To prepare your home for charging, hire an electrician to install a dedicated circuit conveniently near where you will park your Tesla vehicle. The charge port is located in the driver side rear taillight. Follow the links below to learn more about Tesla charging:

Standard Equipment

Model S and Model X include the following charging accessories as standard equipment:

  • Wall Connector (7.4 m)
  • Connector for public charging stations (Type 2)

Install a Tesla Wall Connector to get up to 80 kilometers of range per hour with the fastest way to charge at home. The Wall Connector is a Tesla charging station that can accommodate almost any power supply and allows for the fastest possible home charging.
Available in two cable lengths:

  • Wall Connector with 2.6m cable
  • Wall Connector with 7.4m cable

Review the one page Wall Connector overview to learn more about its features.

Optional Charging Accessories

The Mobile Connector and standard adapter is provided at no cost if a Wall Connector is not required. It provides up to 10 kilometers of range per hour when plugged into a household outlet. Extra connectors or adapters are available to purchase at Tesla Service Centers.

Vehicle On-Board Charger

Tesla vehicles are now equipped with High Amperage Charger which is capable of 16kW. Your Tesla may have other options of on-board chargers.

The Mobile Connector is limited to 2.2kW, regardless of on-board charger choice. To maximize your charging speed at home, install a Wall Connector for the fastest possible home charging.

Installing Charging Equipment at Home

The Tesla Wall Connector provides the fastest charge at home. The Wall Connector is included with your Tesla purchase. Contact your Customer Experience Specialist to get it shipped to your home.

You can find the installation guide and specifications here.

As an alternative installing a Wall Connector, a Mobile Connector allows you to charge your Tesla from most common power sockets. Contact your Customer Experience Specialist if you would like to choose the Mobile Connector over the Tesla Wall Connector.

Contact the home charging team if you need additional assistance or guidance.

Hiring an Electrician

A licensed electrician will need to visit your home to provide a quote for charging equipment installation. Cost of installation will vary by location, depending on the scope of work. For example, some homes may require service panel upgrades or trenching to install home charging equipment. Like any home improvement project, you may want to have 2 or 3 electricians provide a quote for your installation.

We maintain a list of local electricians referred by Tesla owners like yourself: Find an Electrician

Permits and Inspections

As with any home improvement project involving the electrical system, a permit and city or county inspection may be required. Ask your electrician to specify what the local regulatory requirements are for your area.

Incentives

Tesla customers can enjoy a free technical site visit for Home Charging installation by providing the RN number of the Tesla vehicle order to any of our recommended installers. A quotation and a basic description of the work will be provided afterwards. Contact your Customer Experience Specialist for more details.

For new building developments, all car parking spaces with EV charging enabled, together with the meter rooms being part of the EV charging facilities, will enjoy gross floor area (GFA) concession by meeting Building Department's requirements.

Apartment Buildings

Begin talking with property management about your intent to purchase a plug-in vehicle as early as possible. Ask if any of the neighbors have expressed similar interest, or if they have plans to add charging infrastructure to the building. Below you will find two documents to assist with requesting charging installation from your building management. The first document is a templated letter that can be tailored to your specific property. The second is a presentation to show the benefits and process of installing charging.

The installation of charging equipment is a value-adding property upgrade for any apartment or condo community and will help retain and attract energy conscious high-value tenants. Contact charginghk@tesla.com if you have questions about the different options for charging equipment installations.

In addition, there is an example survey which can be used to assess the interest of other owners in your building in installing charging equipment.

Load sharing with multiple Wall Connectors

Up to four Tesla Wall Connectors can be linked together to intelligently share power from a single circuit breaker. This functionality is beneficial for homes or commercial locations which need to charge more than one Tesla vehicle at the same time, but may not have enough power for multiple electrical circuits. For this type of installation, an electrician can provide a distribution box to split power between multiple Wall Connectors and install a communication cable which enables the units to operate as a network. This allows one station to provide maximum power to a single vehicle, or to split power when more than one Tesla is plugged in. To maximize charging speed we recommend installing the largest circuit breaker possible for the electrical panel, up to 100 amps.
