Home Charging Behaviour

What is a best practice for charging a Tesla at home?
We recommend plugging in every evening to top off the battery.

What percentage should I charge the battery to?
For regular use, we recommend keeping your car set within the 'Daily' range bracket, up to approximately 90%. You can adjust how full the battery charges from the charge settings menu.

Some vehicles are equipped with a Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Battery. To determine if your vehicle has an LFP Battery, navigate to Controls > Software > Additional Vehicle Information. If your vehicle is equipped with an LFP Battery, Tesla recommends that you keep your charge limit set to 100%, even for daily use, and that you also fully charge to 100% at least once per week.

Should I wait for the battery to fully deplete before charging?
Tesla uses lithium ion batteries so there is no memory effect. This means there is no need to deplete the battery before charging. We recommend plugging in as often as possible.

How long does it take to charge a Tesla?
Mobile Connector and Wall Connector charging speeds both vary by car and available power supply.

Home Charging Installation

How long does it take to install home charging equipment?
An installation can typically be done in a day, however more complicated jobs may run across a few days.

How much does installing a Tesla home charging equipment cost?
Cost varies depending on the local circumstances. You may want to get multiple installation quotes. Tesla provides a list of recommended electricians in your area who can provide you with a quote based on a free site visit.

Can I use a normal 230V outlet to charge?
Yes. The Mobile Connector can be purchased in the Design Studio at time of order or via the Tesla Shop and can be plugged into a 10 amp 230V outlet. This provides approximately 15km of range per hour of charge. For the best home charging experience, we recommend installing a Wall Connector.

How do I install charging in a multi-unit dwelling?
Multi-unit dwellings consist of apartments, any residence with shared common space, such as parking or electrical infrastructure. Your apartment may have a manager, strata committee, body corporate, or owner who should be informed of your planned charging installation.

We have created template letters below to communicate the value of home charging for your building to ensure all stakeholders are aware of your planned purchase, and your plan to have home charging options.

Note: Always ensure you have approval before installing any charging hardware.

Wall Connector

Do I have to install a Tesla Wall Connector?
The Wall Connector is our recommended home charging solution, as it provides the most convenience and the fastest charging speeds. However, a Tesla can also be charged with the Mobile Connector or at universal charging stations with CCS2 plugs.

How do I connect my Wall Connector to Wi-Fi?
By following the steps for connecting a Wall Connector to local Wi-Fi, you can ensure that your Wall Connector stays up-to-date with over-the-air firmware updates and remote diagnostics.

I have two Tesla cars. What’s the best option for charging both at the same time?
Installing two Wall Connectors configured for power sharing would be the best option to charge multiple vehicles at once.

Supercharging and Destination Charging

Why is Supercharging faster than charging at home?
Superchargers skip the onboard charger of the vehicle, providing up to 250kW of direct current (DC) power to the battery. This level of power requires dedicated transformers and utility connections which are not available in residential situations.

Can I just use a local Supercharger and skip charging at home?
The best charging experience will always come from charging at home and this often costs less than Supercharging. Check the Supercharging support page for more information on usage and the price per kWh.

Where can I learn more about long distance traveling utilizing the Tesla Supercharger network?
Plan your route with the trip planner or see an overview of our current and future Superchargers.

What is Destination Charging?
We work with hotels, shopping centres, restaurants and other hospitality based locations to install Wall Connectors to enable charging when away from home. Learn more about Destination Charging.

I own a property with parking available to the public. How can I join the Destination Charging program?
You can apply to become a Tesla charging partner.
