Home Charging Installation

We recommend charging your Tesla overnight, just like your mobile phone. Pull into your garage, plug in, and you'll wake up to a full charge the next morning. Even better, you'll pay only a fraction as much for electricity as you did for petrol.

To prepare your home for charging, find an electrician to install a Tesla Wall Connector near where you park your car, convenient to the charge port location in the passenger side rear tail light. A Tesla Wall Connector can charge Tesla at a rate of up to 81 kilometres of range each hour.

Please use an electrician familiar with the demands that charging an electric vehicle will place on your home's wiring. Below you can find a list of common questions related to the installation of home charging equipment. Don't delay contacting an electrician; the installation of an outlet can take over a month to complete in some circumstances.

What charging equipment is included with Tesla vehicles?

Tesla includes a Mobile Connector cable (6 metres long) and an adapter for 10 amp general purpose outlets. A Tesla Wall Connector is also included for home charging.

How do I charge Tesla vehicles at home?

Every Tesla is delivered with a Tesla Wall Connector. One of the most convenient aspects of ownership is waking up every morning to a full charge. Tesla recommends installing a Wall Connector near your parking spot to prepare for home charging. Compare differences between the Mobile Connector and Wall Connector.

What are the next steps to prepare for home charging?

Installing home charging equipment is a home improvement project; hire a licensed electrician to prepare your home. An outline of the installation process is below:

Step 1: Contact an electrician
Providing as much information as possible at this point will greatly assist in the process. Include your installation timeline and parking situation. Ask your electrician if sending them photos would help them in assessing the job.

Step 2: Site visit and estimate
Most electricians will need to visit the site to provide an accurate quote. To ensure your electrical system has enough power available for home charging, the electrician should complete a load calculation of all existing circuits.

Step 3: Installation
After determining the scope of work and agreeing on cost, work can begin. The installation itself typically takes less than a day, although some larger projects may require a return visit.

Step 4: Inspection
The local utility may require an inspector to visit site and ensure the installation meets all relevant legislation. Typically an inspector can access your switchboard without disturbing you, however if access to your home is required they will notify you by written request.

When should I install home charging?

We recommend installing home charging shortly after ordering Tesla. Some installations, such as apartment buildings, or switchboard upgrades upgrades, will require longer lead times. Installing the electrical equipment ahead of time will ensure you are prepared to charge at home when taking delivery of your vehicle.

How much does it cost to install charging equipment?

Every installation is unique, cost will vary depending on the scope of work. An electrician will need to review your home to provide an accurate estimate. Distance is an important factor; an installation which is 50 metres away from the electrical panel will be more expensive than an installation 5 metres away. Some homes may need a switchboard upgrade; however this is uncommon. Cost can range from $500 to $5,000 (or more) depending on the scope of work. The average Wall Connector installation is $1,000-$2,000, however it's important to note that every installation is custom to the home. Have an electrician review your home to receive a formal estimate.

Will I need to upgrade the electrical panel of my home?

A licensed electrician will need to do a maximum demand calculation on your home to determine how much power is available for home charging.

The Wall Connector is a flexible unit that can be configured to a variety of charging rates, the need to upgrade will depend on a number of factors, such as existing loading and desired charging speed.

Are there additional Charging options or accessories?

In addition to the standard charging equipment, Tesla offers a variety of accessories designed to further enhance your charging experience:

  • Additional charging equipment is available to purchase.

What is a Tesla Wall Connector?

The Wall Connector is a Tesla specific charging station, permanently mounted to a wall or post. For the most power, install the unit on a three phase circuit.

The Wall Connector can be customised to almost any power supply, including single phase or lower power situations. An internal dial allows an electrician to program operating current (amps). The Wall Connector can be installed on a circuit from 6 to 32 amps. Find the installation guide here.

What is a charger?

The purpose of the charger is to convert Alternating Current (AC) coming from the power source into Direct Current (DC) to store in the vehicle battery. The charger hardware is built inside Tesla vehicles. Chargers can be described in terms of the power (kilowatts (kW)) which they can draw from the power source.
