Semi Charging
When it’s time to charge your Semi, navigate to one of Tesla’s Megacharger locations. Megachargers provide up to 1.2 MW and can charge up to 60% of a Semi battery in 30 minutes.
Megacharger can recover up to 60% of your range in 30 minutes.
No. Megacharger can provide up to 1.2 MW, but the actual charging rate depends on several factors such as your battery level, battery temperature and if another truck is charging at the same Megacharger. Your Semi touchscreen will show how many minutes remain until charging is complete.
No. Semi will begin charging when you plug it into the Megacharger. Payment will be handled by your fleet manager in the Tesla for Business portal.
To charge with a Megacharger, simply insert the Megacharger handle into the Semi charge port. Once the handle is inserted, the charge port light will flash green and charging will begin automatically.
When your Semi is charged, the charge port light will show solid green. When you’re ready to disconnect the Megacharger from your Semi, press and hold the button on the Megacharger handle, then remove the handle from your charge port. Do not force the Megacharger handle to disconnect from your charge port. If the handle does not release easily, unlock your Semi and try the handle again.
Return the handle back to the Megacharger, then move the vehicle so the next driver can access the Megacharger.
If you need to end your charging session before Semi is fully charged, you can stop the session early from your Semi touchscreen or in the Tesla app.
If you plug in to Megacharger and charging does not begin automatically:
Contact your fleet manager and confirm that the Semi is listed in the Tesla for Business account.
Ensure the Megacharger handle is fully seated. An amber light on the handle indicates that the handle is not fully connected to the Semi.
Press and hold the Megacharger handle, unplug it from the Semi and plug in again after waiting 30 seconds.
If charging still does not begin automatically, try another open Megacharging stall.
Your fleet manager will set a charge limit for the truck and you will not be able to charge above that limit. You can charge under the limit if needed. We recommend using Trip Planner to estimate how much charge you’ll need to reach your destination. Charging speeds are slower above 90%. We recommend not charging above that level unless needed for your upcoming routes.
Yes. All Megacharger sites allow you to charge with a trailer attached, but most require a back-in maneuver.
No. Supercharger and Wall Connector are designed for passenger vehicles and are not compatible with Semi.
No. Megacharger sites currently only support Tesla Semi trucks.
Do not use Megacharger stall if it is leaking fluid, has a cracked handle or has a cut or loose cable. Call Tesla Service at 1-877-798-3752 and let them know the site, stall number and what kind of damage you saw.
Open the map on your Semi touchscreen or in the Tesla app. On the map, Megacharger sites are marked by gray pins. Tap a pin to see the address, distance and how many Megacharger stalls are available at that site.
On the map on your touchscreen or in the Tesla app, select the Megacharger pin for the site. Tapping on the station’s red pin will provide additional instructions if needed including directions to the stalls, gate codes and more.
Most Megacharger stations are open for charging 24 hours a day. The amenities near a Megacharger site are subject to their business hours. If a site does have limited charging hours, the hours will be displayed on the map on your touchscreen when you view the site information.
Semi VINs are added to your Tesla for Business account by the Tesla team after you place your Semi order. If you own a Semi that is not listed in your Tesla for Business account, contact your Tesla Account team.
If the driver has a Tesla Account associated with the email address, they will receive a notice saying they were added to the Semi. If they do not have a Tesla Account, they will receive an email asking them to create one.
Note: Only an admin for your Tesla for Business account will be able to add drivers to your account.
You are able to pick any charge limit you like for your Semi. Generally, a lower percentage leads to less wear on the battery while a higher percentage gives your vehicle more range. See how far your truck typically drives and how often you would like it to charge, then set your charge limit based on your preferences.
You can set the stop percentage for each truck separately from anywhere in your Tesla for Business account. Drivers are unable to change the stop percentage for the vehicle and the vehicle will not charge above that limit.
Unlike with Supercharging, drivers do not pay for Megacharging at the charger. Megacharing sessions will be billed to the Tesla for Business account that owns the Semi. Megacharging is invoiced monthly.
Note: Your Semi will only be able to Megacharge if it is added to your Tesla for Business account.
Pricing varies by site and can fluctuate throughout the day. You can see the current price for each Megacharger site by selecting the site’s pin on the map on your truck’s touchscreen or in the Tesla app.
Your price is set once the vehicle is plugged in and will not change during the session.
To add a payment method in your Tesla for Business account, you first need to add a billing address. To add your billing address, follow these steps:
Select ‘Add’ under Invoice Billing Details and enter your billing address.
Once you’ve saved your billing address, you can add a payment method. You can designate which payment method you would like to use by clicking on the current payment method. You can also remove a payment method by selecting ‘Remove.’
All Megacharging payments are made through your Tesla for Business account. You can make payments using ACH or SEPA.
To view and download your Megacharging statements, follow these steps:
Set the Invoice Type to Charging, then select the monthly invoice you’d like to see.
Once you’ve selected the invoice, you can either ‘View PDF’ to see the invoice in your browser, or ‘Export to CSV’ to download a session-level report.
If a Megacharging session is missing, send your Tesla Account team the VIN, site, stall and time of the session for assistance. Include the truck display totals if available.
Note: You will receive a monthly Tesla for Business statement which includes your bill for public Megacharging. Tesla does not provide PDF statements for each Megacharging session.
To check if you have an unpaid Megacharging balance, follow these steps:
If you have an outstanding balance, you will see a banner at the top of the page with a ‘Review & Pay’ button.
At certain Megacharger sites, the cost of Megacharging differs at different times of day. At these sites, the cost during peak hours will be higher than during off-peak hours. Prices and peak times are shown on the vehicle touchscreen.
Certain Megacharger sites offer on-peak and off-peak pricing based on how busy the site is, rather than a set schedule. When pricing is based on how busy the site is, the prices change depending on whether stalls are available. The prices do not change mid-session.
Note: Your Megacharging price is determined by the plug-in time and does not adjust if pricing changes during the charging session.
Megacharger idle fees help keep stalls open and available for the next Semi. Megachargers are designed for fast charging and should only be used for as long as it takes to charge.
Idle fees accrue when the truck stays plugged in after charging is complete. Fees are waived for the first five minutes and then billed until the truck is moved. At a public Megacharger, move your Semi when you are done charging to avoid idle fees. Fees, and the cost of Megacharging, will be billed to the Tesla for Business account that owns the Semi.
No. At launch, you cannot skip Plug and Charge at your own site. You must include every Tesla Semi VIN in your Tesla for Business account, including Semi trucks that only charge at your depot.
