Trade-Ins

We accept passenger cars, trucks, vans and SUVs for trade-in value toward a new or pre-owned Tesla vehicle purchase. Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EV) are acceptable for trade in.

We do not accept motorcycles, RVs or commercial vehicles. Non-drivable vehicles are also not accepted for trade in. See below for eligibility of branded vehicles.

After your order is placed and a VIN has been assigned, a Tesla Advisor will contact you to start the trade-in process. In order to receive a trade-in offer, you must submit details such as your VIN, mileage, zip code and photos in your Tesla Account. We will contact you when your trade-in offer is ready for review. Trade-in vehicles must be dropped at your delivery appointment.

Any applicable positive equity can be applied toward the purchase of your new or pre-owned Tesla vehicle. If you have negative equity, it must be paid either at delivery or rolled into your financing agreement (pending credit approval).

Yes, but some lessors impose restrictions on allowing active leases to be bought out. Below is a list of some of these lessors that no longer allow third-party buyouts for their leased vehicles. Before placing your order, contact your lender to verify any third-party buyout restrictions.

Yes. You can trade in your vehicle if you are still making finance payments. We will calculate and compare the pay-off amount and any equity (positive or negative) that will be added to your Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement.

Note: Refrain from paying off your lease or loan in full prior to trading in your vehicle. Any delays in the title receipt may delay your delivery date.

We accept trade-ins previously registered in the United States if the vehicle meets the below criteria:

• The vehicle has a valid import record showing complete.
• The vehicle is registered in a Canadian province.

We do not accept more than one trade-in vehicle toward the purchase of a new or pre-owned vehicle.

If you are trading in a vehicle that is titled in another person’s name, you must transfer the vehicle title of ownership to your name before your delivery appointment. We will not accept a granted power of attorney in lieu of legal ownership.

As your delivery date approaches, you will be asked to submit your trade-in details in your Tesla Account. Once submitted, we will provide a trade-in offer based on current market conditions. Trade-in offers are valid for 30 days or 1,600 kilometers, whichever comes first, and are contingent on the information you provide about the vehicle being accurate.

You can view your trade-in offer in the Tesla app by following these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Open your pre-delivery tasks.
3. Navigate to the ‘Trade-In’ section to find your trade-in offer.

If your offer is still under review, you'll see the status 'Trade-In Offer Pending.'

Yes. You can remove your trade-in vehicle from your order by following these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Open your pre-delivery tasks.
3. Navigate to the ‘Trade-In’ section.
4. Next to your offer, tap ‘Review’ > ‘Reject Trade-In Offer.’
5. Select a reason and tap ‘Submit.’

Trade-in values for non-Tesla vehicles are determined based on market data utilizing industry standard tools and resources (pending vehicle history verification).

Trade-in values for Tesla vehicles are determined based on vehicle configuration, history, mileage and age. The resulting value is based on information you provide us about the vehicle, market data and internal Tesla product knowledge.

Aftermarket vehicle modifications typically have a negative effect on trade-in valuations. It is best for trade-in vehicles to be in ‘stock’ or original state.

All trade-ins must be dropped off during your scheduled delivery appointment. We cannot accept trade-ins before or after your scheduled delivery appointment.

Trade-ins must be dropped off at your assigned delivery location during your scheduled delivery appointment.

All owner(s) listed on the trade-in vehicle title and/or registration must be present at delivery to sign the trade-in documentation. Failure to have these individuals present could result in delayed delivery.

Before trading in your vehicle, the vehicle owner must clear any data and restore it to factory settings. This ensures that all your personal information is removed before you trade in your vehicle. We will not check whether you have cleared your data and we are not responsible for ensuring that your personal data is removed from your trade-in vehicle.

If you are trading in a non-Tesla vehicle, check your owner’s manual for guidance on removing your data. If you are trading in a Tesla vehicle, tap ‘Controls’ > ‘Service’ > ‘Factory Reset’ on your touchscreen to clear your data and restore to factory settings.

If you sell or trade in your vehicle that is currently enrolled in Full Self-Driving (Supervised), it is not transferable to your new Tesla vehicle.

Trade-in vehicles cannot be returned once trade-in documents are signed, the vehicle is in our possession and the transaction is complete. For additional details, review your Trade-In Annex.

Contact the delivery location where you dropped off your trade-in vehicle as soon as possible. If the vehicle is still on-site, a representative will work with you to recover your belongings. However, once the vehicle is in transit to its next location, lost items can no longer be retrieved.

Note: Tesla is not responsible for items left in trade-in vehicles. We will make reasonable efforts to recover lost items but cannot guarantee their return or condition. We will not reimburse or otherwise compensate you for any lost or damaged items.
