From Dog Mode to Bee Mode

Peter Crabbe, November 4, 2025

I’ve been beekeeping for several years and now manage three sites across Dorset. To keep up, I needed a form of transport that was environmentally friendly, spacious and could handle long distances efficiently – without upsetting the bees in their homes.

I know that a Tesla vehicle wasn’t made with beekeeping in mind, but after experiencing it myself, I realised that there really is something for everyone in this vehicle.

I can use Dog Mode to keep the bees safe

I can fit up to four hives comfortably in the rear area of a Model Y vehicle. It is also a big help having the Dog Mode feature, which can keep the bees cool in their hives – as they can easily overheat – whilst I prepare the sites to rehouse them.

Going the extra mile

The Model Y’s range is more than enough for travelling between sites and even visiting family who live over 250 miles away. Now, my journeys are much easier compared to my experience with my previous vehicle. Trip Planner, fast charging and the ample number of Superchargers along my route make every journey straightforward.

Dog Mode is available in all Tesla vehicles, designed to maintain a comfortable cabin temperature when you need to briefly leave your pet inside. Whether in hot or cold conditions, Dog Mode ensures your pet stays safe while the vehicle displays a message on the screen letting passersby know they’re being looked after.
