Excess Wear and Tear Guide
Tesla adheres to industry-wide standards and guidelines for excess wear and tear upon vehicle return at the end of the contract hire or Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) agreement.
Fair wear and tear refers to the expected deterioration of a vehicle over time due to normal usage and should not be confused with damage caused by specific incidents, negligence or improper handling.
General Condition
The vehicle must be returned in a safe, legal and reliable mechanical condition and have at least 30 calendar days' MOT validity.
All electronic safety features and driver assistance systems, including for example Enhanced Autopilot (if equipped) and cameras, must be fully functional.
The exterior should be clean enough to allow a thorough inspection, and the interior should be valeted, free of rubbish and without any lingering odours.
Exterior Condition
The vehicle’s paintwork, body panels, bumpers and trim must be free from rust and corrosion.
Any evidence of poor repair work is not acceptable.
Badges, labels or advertising must be removed unless they were originally applied with the leasing company’s approval, and any damage resulting from their removal must be repaired.
Car wrapping is not permitted, and any noticeable differences in paint colour due to removed branding will not be accepted.
Small chips, including those on door edges, are expected with normal usage. However, if the chipping is excessive or concentrated in one area, requiring a full panel repaint, it will be considered damage rather than fair wear and tear.
Minor dents up to 10mm are acceptable, provided there are no more than two per panel and the paint surface remains intact.
Dents on the roof or structural pillars are not acceptable.
Scratches and abrasions up to 25mm in length are permissible as long as they do not expose the primer or bare metal.
Mouldings and wheel arch trims may have minor scuffs and scratches as long as they are not broken or deformed.
If a tow bar is fitted, it must be in good condition, free from rust and its electrical connections must be fully functional. A ball cover must be present.
Interior Condition
The vehicle’s interior must be clean and free from excessive wear, stains or odours.
Upholstery and trim should not have visible burns, tears or deep staining.
All original seats must be present.
Normal wear and light soiling are expected, but any excessive damage will be chargeable.
Interior fittings such as seat belts, rear-view mirrors, courtesy lights and sun visors must be intact and functional.
Door panels, boot linings and luggage areas may show light scuffs, but torn or split floor coverings and damaged trim panels are not acceptable.
Mechanical Condition
The vehicle must meet current MOT standards at the time of return and have outstanding validity of at least 30 calendar days. Any mechanical failure caused by neglecting servicing requirements or ignoring vehicle warning alerts is not considered fair wear and tear.
Alterations to the manufacturer’s components, such as non-original suspension parts, are not permitted.
Underbody Condition
Any significant impact damage to the underside of the vehicle is not acceptable.
Additionally, any dent or damage to the high-voltage battery is strictly prohibited.
Windows, Mirrors and Lights
Windscreens and windows may have light scratches as long as they do not interfere with the driver’s visibility and any heating elements function properly.
Cracks, chips or holes are not acceptable.
Door mirrors must not be missing, cracked or damaged, and they must be fully operational.
All vehicle lights must be in working order. Minor scuff marks on light lenses are permissible, provided they do not interfere with the light beam.
However, cracks, holes or any modifications such as smoked or partially covered lenses are not acceptable.
Tyres and Wheels
All tyres must meet the minimum UK legal tread depth requirements and comply with Tesla’s recommendations regarding type, size and speed rating.
There must be no damage to the tyre sidewalls or tread.
Wheels must be the manufacturer’s original specification and match the vehicle configuration.
Steel rims or alloy wheels should not have dents or structural damage, while minor scuffs up to 25mm on the outer edges of alloy wheels are considered acceptable.
All original equipment, controls and accessories must be present and in working order.
All vehicle standard equipment vehicle (e.g. charging cables, towing eye, tow hitch, etc) must be available upon return. Two key fobs or key cards, depending on the model, must also be included.
Accessories and Modifications
Tesla-branded accessories purchased separately, such as roof racks or all-season floor mats, may remain in the vehicle if they are in good condition.
Unauthorised vehicle modifications are not permitted. Any aftermarket modifications must be removed, provided their removal does not leave any damage or create electronic warnings. Any damage resulting from their installation or removal will be chargeable.
Any accessories or modifications that are not immediately visible, such as aftermarket speakers or suspension parts, must be declared.
The vehicle must have been serviced in accordance with Tesla’s maintenance schedule.
Necessary repairs and servicing must be performed by an authorised agent. If the leasing company is not responsible for these, service records should be maintained and made available upon return.
Any illuminated warning lights must be addressed before returning the vehicle, and unresolved issues will not be accepted.
Excess Wear and Charges
Any vehicle repairs relating to excess wear and tear should be performed prior vehicle drop-off or collection at the end of contract.
Repairs can be carried out by Tesla or a Tesla-Approved Body Shop. If damage is covered by insurance, you may choose to process repairs through your insurer.
The allowable mileage for your vehicle was set at the beginning of your contract hire or PCP agreement. To confirm your maximum mileage limit, refer to your agreement.
If the vehicle’s mileage exceeds this limit, excess mileage charges will apply as per the contract terms. Any unauthorised odometer changes or alterations are not permitted.
