Supercharger Fees

We designed the Supercharger network to enable a seamless, enjoyable road trip experience. Therefore, we’ve heard you and understand that it can be frustrating to arrive at a station only to discover fully charged vehicles occupying spaces.

We envision a future where vehicles move themselves once fully charged, enhancing network efficiency and the customer experience even further. Until then, we ask that vehicles be moved from the Supercharger once charged. A customer would never leave a vehicle parked by the pump at a fuel station and the same thinking applies with Superchargers.

Supercharger Congestion Fee

Congestion fee is a fee you pay only when a Supercharger site is busy and one of the following applies:

Your vehicle’s battery is already at or above the congestion fee level of 80% battery charge; or
Your charging session has ended

The congestion fee encourages drivers to charge only as much as is needed for their trip, rather than all the way to 100%. This increases the availability of Superchargers so that everyone has access when they need it.

If you meet the criteria for a congestion fee during your Supercharging session, you will be notified on the vehicle touchscreen and from the Tesla app that congestion fees apply. You can see the battery charge level where congestion fees apply on the vehicle touchscreen and the Tesla app. You will have a five-minute grace period to disconnect your vehicle and leave before congestion fees apply. After the grace period, you will be charged a fee for each minute you remain connected to the Supercharger.

Supercharging costs and fees will be billed to the Supercharging payment method you’ve selected in the Tesla app. If Tesla is unable to automatically bill a stored payment method, you will be billed for congestion fees incurred at your next Service Center visit.
No. There is not a limit on the amount of congestion fees that may accrue. We recommend moving your vehicle once battery charge is above the level when congestion fees may apply.
The Tesla app notifies you when your vehicle passed the charge level threshold or when charging is complete. Congestion fees then accrue when the station is at capacity until your vehicle is moved. Supercharging session details, including congestion fees incurred, are available in your Tesla app after each Supercharging session.
Yes. Congestion fees start to apply once your vehicle surpasses the designated charge level. At that point, the vehicle is close to fully charged and the spot should be made available for the next driver.
Yes. Vehicles with free, unlimited Supercharging purchased and delivered before 2017 won't incur a congestion fee during an active charging session. However, congestion fees will apply if a site is busy and once one of the following applies:

Your vehicle’s battery is already at or above the congestion fee level of 80% battery charge; or

The charging session has ended

In contrast, vehicles with free Supercharging credits can be charged a congestion fee even during an active charging session when a site is busy.
