Powerwall Calibration

Powerwall 3P, Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 2 periodically calibrate to ensure optimal battery performance. Calibration ensures that your Powerwall continues to operate accurately and efficiently for your home.

Note: The calibration process is normal and is not an indication of any issues with your Powerwall 3P, Powerwall 3 or Powerwall 2.

When Will Calibration Happen

Due to normal cycling of the battery during daily use, calibration can occur naturally and will have no impact on your system’s operation. However, if daily cycling is not sufficient, the system will undergo a dedicated calibration cycle every 30-90 days.

How to Know When Calibration Is in Progress

When your Powerwall 3P, Powerwall 3 or Powerwall 2 is undergoing calibration, you will see a ‘Calibration in Progress’ banner in the Tesla app. This banner will remain visible until the process is complete.

What to Expect During Calibration

To complete calibration, Powerwall 3P, Powerwall 3 and Powerwall 2 must charge to 100% state of charge and occasionally discharge below 20%.

During calibration:

  • Your Powerwall may discharge beyond your backup reserve.
  • Solar may not power your home loads or charge Powerwall during the process.
  • Your Powerwall may temporarily ignore your Grid Charging and Energy Exports settings. It will not violate any utility restrictions.

The time to complete calibration varies from system to system. However, certain site conditions may cause calibration to take longer such as:

  • Utility-imposed import or export restrictions
  • Busbar protection features (panel limits)
  • Powerwall permanent power limitation due to site conditions

The above restrictions limit the ability to charge and discharge, and as a result, increase the time it takes to complete the required calibration cycling. Once your Powerwall 3P, Powerwall 3 or Powerwall 2 is in calibration for 72 hours, it will exit the process and re-attempt calibration in the future.

Powerwall will exit calibration in the following situations:

  • Off-Grid Event: Calibration will stop when there is a grid outage. Your Powerwall will provide the backup power you expect.

How to Delay Calibration

If Powerwall 3P, Powerwall 3 or Powerwall 2 begins calibration at an inconvenient time, you can delay calibration and schedule it to begin at a later time. To delay your Powerwall 3P, Powerwall 3 or Powerwall 2 calibration, follow these steps:

  1. Select ‘Calibration in Progress’ in the Tesla app.
  2. Select ‘Delay Calibration.’
  3. Set a time within the next 72 hours for Powerwall to restart calibration and select ‘Save.’

During the delay, Powerwall will operate normally. Calibration can only be delayed once per cycle.

Note: Delaying calibration requires Powerwall 3P or Powerall 3 with firmware version 26.2 or Powerwall 2 with firmware version 26.18.2 or later. Delaying calibration also requires Tesla app version 4.50 or later.
