Customer FAQ

What is the GMP and Tesla Powerwall offer?
GMP and Tesla will install a Powerwall battery in your home. The battery will provide backup power to your home in the event of a grid outage. By using the battery to provide value to the grid, GMP and Tesla are able to offer this at only $15 a month for 10 years or an upfront payment of $1,500. GMP will use Powerwall when grid demand is highest and you have backup power for your home for 10 years.

How does the GMP and Tesla Powerwall offer differ from a typical Powerwall purchase?
If you do not want to participate in the GMP and Telsa Powerwall offering you still have the option to purchase your own Powerwall. The following table outlines the differences between the GMP and Tesla Powerwall offering and a typical Powerwall purchase:

What costs are included in the payments to GMP?
The $15 a month for 10 years or upfront payment of $1,500 covers the cost of Powerwall and typical installation costs. You will be responsible for additional costs. These additional costs may include work necessary to make your home ready for Powerwall, to relocate hard-to-access loads, or to improve the aesthetics of the installation. Sales tax is not included in the payments.

How will GMP and Tesla use the battery?
Powerwall will be used in coordination with other participating energy storage systems. Energy storage systems participating in the program will be dispatched during times when the grid is most stressed, reducing the cost to Vermonters of operating and maintaining the grid. They will also participate in electricity markets, providing services like conventional power plants do, but in a cleaner and better way.

How much backup power will Powerwall provide?
In the event of a grid outage, Powerwall will use the energy in the battery to provide backup power. The amount of energy will depend on how GMP used the Powerwall that day, but the majority of the time you will have at least a couple of hours of backup power. As the battery is charged and discharged by GMP, the state of charge in the battery will change, meaning that you could have many more hours of backup if GMP has not used the energy.

If you have a solar system or choose to install one when starting the program, Powerwall will work together with your solar during an outage. Powerwall charges with energy produced by new or existing solar to provide backup power during an extended outage.

How much of my electrical load can be backed up?
Powerwall is designed to back up your home. Heavy loads such as large pumps or air conditioning systems will likely require more than one Powerwall. However, lights, sockets, refrigerators, electronics, and electrical sockets can be backed up with one Powerwall. Tesla’s design teams will work with you to find the best solution.

Who will own the Powerwall battery?
GMP will own Powerwall. This is necessary for GMP to deliver value to the grid and make this Powerwall offer to customers.

Who will be responsible for warranty issues and maintenance of my Powerwall?
As owner of Powerwall, GMP will be responsible for any issues. If you experience an issue with Powerwall, you should contact the Green Mountain Power Energy Services Team at 1-888-835-4672.

If you choose to install solar with your Powerwall, the warranty and maintenance of the solar system will be managed separately from the battery, per the agreements associated with the solar purchase and install.

How will I be billed for participation?
Payment for participation in the program will show up on your GMP energy statement. If you choose the monthly payment, a $15 charge will show up on each monthly statement. If you pay up-front, a $1,500 charge will appear on the next monthly statement. You may also notice a credit on your statement. This credit is to ensure that you are not being charged for electricity that is lost during the charging and discharging of Powerwall.

What if I want to cancel my participation in the program?
You can cancel your participation in the program at any time. If it is before installation of the battery, then nothing further is needed. If you wish to cancel after installation, there will be a charge of $450 to remove Powerwall.

What if I move?
If you are going to sell your home, GMP will work with you to transfer participation to the next homeowner. If the new owner does not wish to participate in the program, participation will need to be cancelled and there will be a $450 charge to remove Powerwall.

Will the Powerwall work with my solar system?
Yes, during an outage Powerwall can recharge with solar energy from a new or existing solar system. This extends your backup power for protection during extended outages.

Do I need to have a solar system to participate?
No, Powerwall is often installed on its own. It can charge from the grid and make that energy available to you during a grid outage.

Will the installation of Powerwall impact my existing solar system?
The Powerwall is designed not to impact the regular operation of the solar system. Adding a Powerwall under this program will not change your existing Net Energy Metering (NEM) treatment.

What are the requirements for participation?
You need to:

  • be a customer of GMP
  • own your home
  • have reliable internet access to allow GMP and Tesla to communicate with the Powerwall
  • be current on your GMP account
  • be on one of GMP's most basic residential energy rates—Rate 01 or Rate 06 (more than 95% of GMP residential customers already are)

If you also choose to go solar at the time you join this program, there may be additional eligibility requirements for the solar product you choose.

What if I rent my home?
Only the owner of the home can participate in the program. If you rent your home, consider asking your landlord if they are willing to participate in the program and install Powerwall. The owner of the home would need to pay program charges on their GMP energy statement.

Will participation change how much I spend on electricity?
No. As a participant in the program, GMP will bill you for your net energy usage. Any energy metered when you charge the battery will be subtracted out of your metered total when it is discharged back on to the grid. GMP will be paying attention to how often Powerwall is charged and discharged and they will credit your bill for the electricity that is lost. The result is that the amount you spend on electricity will not change because of participation in the program. If you choose to go solar, that has the potential to reduce your energy bill.

What happens at the end of the 10-year program?
At the end of 10 years, you owe no more money as part of the program. Powerwall will remain in your home and provide backup power for an additional 5 years or until the end of its useful life. You can also request for the removal of Powerwall once the 10-year program ends. GMP will remove Powerwall at no additional cost to you so that it can be recycled.

Can I get more than one Powerwall?
Yes. If you wish to back up all of your electrical loads, it may take two Powerwalls. You can get one or two Powerwalls as part of the program, but you will be charged for each ($30 per month for two batteries). We cannot provide more than two Powerwalls as part of the GMP offering. If you want more, you can choose to purchase all of your Powerwalls instead.

Can Powerwall charge my EV?
When the utility power grid is online, GMP will control your Powerwall so you will not be able to customize how your EV is charged. However, during a utility power outage you can not only power your home but if there is surplus Powerwall energy, you can top off your EV.

What if I have a backup generator already? Can my generator charge Powerwall?
At this time, Powerwall does not integrate with a generator. You can still participate in the program and get Powerwall, but your generator will not be able to work with and charge the Powerwall.
