Backup Power and Energy Savings for Your Family
June 9, 2025
With a 13.5 kWh battery and built-in bidirectional inverter, Powerwall delivers reliable backup when the grid goes down, so daily life stays uninterrupted and your home stays safe, even in emergencies.
Whole-Home Backup
Powerwall stores 13.5 kWh and delivers 11.5 kW of continuous power—that is enough to cover peak use in about 95 % of U.S. homes. With whole-home backup power, you can keep essentials like your refrigerator, air conditioning, heater and Wi-Fi on at any time. When an outage occurs, your Powerwall automatically begins to power your home with stored energy, so you can enjoy power without interruption.
Storm Watch
Storm Watch is a software feature that monitors real-time data from regional weather services for severe-weather alerts. When severe weather is forecasted in your area, Powerwall will automatically charge to its maximum capacity from solar or the grid. Activate Storm Watch from the Tesla app and you will be notified when Storm Watch is active, showing charge progress and the weather event timeline. When Powerwall is already fully charged before the start of a storm, your home will have the full 13.5 kWh available at the start of an outage, maximizing your backup duration.
Built for Safety and Reliability
Powerwall is designed to operate safely in extreme conditions. Heat Mode uses internal heaters and smart controls to keep battery cells warm, allowing your Powerwall to charge and discharge normally even in freezing temperatures as low as -4°F. With an IP67 rating, Powerwall is fully dust resistant and can temporarily operate in two feet of water. It also meets the performance criteria of the UL 9540A fire safety standard, ensuring that any internal battery failure remains contained. Powerwall can be installed indoors or outdoors—no extra housing or covers are required to meet building and fire code requirements.
Automated Savings and Earnings
Powerwall’s intelligent software turns stored energy into real value automatically. Time-Based Control learns your utility’s rate schedule and your home’s energy usage patterns. It automatically charges from solar or off-peak grid power when rates are low, then discharges when prices are high—lowering your electric bill and reducing your reliance on your local grid. Participating in the Tesla Virtual Power Plant allows you to export excess stored energy during high-demand events, earning payouts while supporting grid reliability. Over-the-air software updates continually improve your system, so your Powerwall gets more efficient over time.
Expand Your Backup Power
A single Powerwall can be connected to up to three Expansion units, stacking storage to 54 kWh without extra inverters or breaker boxes. This allows you to scale your available energy capacity from Powerwall as your energy needs evolve.
Designed to Last
Backed by a 10-year unlimited-cycle warranty, Powerwall is designed to retain at least 70% of its original capacity for 10 years after installation. Tesla runs remote diagnostics 24/7 on a fleet of more than 1 million Powerwalls worldwide and makes improvements through firmware updates.
