Introducing the New Model Y

Overview

Nearly five years after the first Model Y deliveries began, we have launched the new Model Y: A redesigned version of the world’s best-selling vehicle with a more premium exterior, upgraded interior and numerous engineering improvements that help to maximize efficiency and comfort.

Highlights

The comprehensive redesign has improved cabin quietness. Road noise was reduced by 22%, impact noise by 20% and wind noise by 20%. This ride quietness is achieved not only through vehicle systems and engineering innovations, but also with the help of materials like acoustic glass incorporated throughout the vehicle.

New Model Y also has 5% higher rated range with the same battery energy and more comfortable ride handling compared to the previous, in part due to meticulously engineered improvements like new low-friction lubrication fluid, optimized gear grinding, reduced brake drag and improved tire rolling resistance. The AWD trim now has a 320mi EPA est. range and a 4.1s 0 to 60 time. In addition, the already impressive electric vehicle architecture has been transferred to this version, keeping the underlying battery technology unchanged.

Both ride comfort and quietness are improved while still retaining the Tesla signature agility and handling thanks to new chassis hardware including a stiffer body structure, redesigned suspension geometry and kinematics, and damping technology borrowed from Upgraded Model 3.

Redesigned Exterior With Improved Aerodynamics

The nose sits lower than the previous version and is emphasized by a new cross-car lightbar that draws from the confident, bold aesthetic of both Cybertruck and the recently unveiled Cybercab designs. The full-width, three-piece lightbar is engineered to be both safer for pedestrians and more aerodynamically efficient than the outgoing vehicle’s current fixtures.

Below the lightbar there is an all-new front fascia with a strong, clean, horizontal graphic that creates a sense of width and visually plants the vehicle to the ground. The horizontal aesthetic leads to outboard aerodynamic ducts that further improve the efficiency of the vehicle.

The rear of the vehicle is defined by our all-new rear light bar and tailgate. First of its kind, the rear light bar is an indirect, externally reflected lighting system that projects the rear lamp function onto a custom applique. The rear light bar is one cross-car light, making it one of the largest lightbars in the industry at 5 feet.

The tailgate, spoiler and rear fascia are also completely redesigned for maximum aerodynamic efficiency and high-speed stability. The rear diffuser is extended and widened to improve downforce while better protecting the vehicle in low-speed impacts and, much like the front fascia, also creates a cleaner, more confident appearance when combined with the tailgate that widens the vehicle and helps give it a more visually planted stance.

Complementing the aerodynamic exterior package is the rear spoiler and new wheels, both of which add to the efficiency of the vehicle. The rear spoiler is now made from advanced thermoplastics, which allow for an optimal aerodynamic shape, and our new 19-inch standard wheel is one of the most efficient wheels we have ever created.

Beyond styling and aerodynamic efficiency, the daily functionality of the vehicle has also been improved. The front trunk drain plug and accessory system sold separately allow for multiple use cases such as a cooler, changing table or shopping bag divider while the new rear tow hitch cover now operates with quarter-turn fasteners for easy access to the tow hardware.

Premium Interior With Added Comfort

We approached the interior upgrades for New Model Y with the goal of improving and refining every surface, interaction and detail to deliver an exceptional cabin experience. The goal behind the development of every component was to enhance it for the customer: higher quality materials that can be seen and touched, more precise details and fitment, improved comfort and ease of use, and lighter parts for improved efficiency and range.

The new interior maintains our clean design aesthetic and focuses on creating a calm, quiet and refined environment. This approach is evident in the multitude of detailed improvements across the cabin, from obvious visual changes to subtle quality enhancements.

Ambiance and Craftsmanship

• Enhanced cabin appeal and nighttime ambiance: New wraparound, multicolor ambient lighting automatically adjusts brightness based on the environment and is designed to minimize windshield reflections.

• Vastly enhanced interior craftsmanship: The center console now features sliding doors with precise, smooth movements and is covered in genuine aluminum. Additional aluminum accents adorn the steering wheel, door trims and instrument panel. Every interface has been re-designed for increased precision and tighter fit. Material refinements have been made to deliver a higher quality appearance and increased sound dampening, with soft, wrapped components extending from the headliner to the floor. New manufacturing technologies enable textiles with a soft, refined feel.

Comfort and Convenience

• Upgraded roof and windshield improves climate comfort: New roof glass coatings now reflect 7x more solar energy, resulting in quieter fan operation, faster cooling times, lower energy consumption and improved occupant comfort.

• Newly designed, more comfortable seats: First-row seats have improved comfort and added ventilation. Second-row seats have more comfortable cushions and bolsters, as well as powered recline and the one of the quickest fold-flat operation in its class from high-power seat motors.

• Improved driver ergonomics and usability: New customizable steering wheel switches allow for quick operation of the most frequently used vehicle functions.

• Entirely new backseat passenger experience with 8’’ rear touchscreen: A new second-row touchscreen supports climate controls, gaming and video/audio streaming. The display also supports dual Bluetooth device connectivity, which allows occupants the choice of different media options, and a high-powered rear charging system with 65W dual USB outlets that can charge two laptops at once.
• Enhanced connectivity capabilities from a new telematics unit: Significant boost to cellular performance with 50% faster download speeds and 30% greater range, which limits dead zones and enables reliable connection in most traveled regions. Greatly improved Wi-Fi connectivity with up to 300% faster download speeds supports faster video streaming and software updates and an extended range up to 200% supports sustained connectivity in areas like garages and driveways.
