Making History—Again

When we first unveiled our Model S prototype to the world in 2009, few believed that electric vehicles (EVs) were suitable for real-world driving. EVs were criticized for having limited range, long charging times, underwhelming performance and uninspired design.

When we began delivering Model S to owners in 2012, we proved that electric vehicles could not only be desirable to own, but were also fun to drive.  With its skateboard-like architecture, the design of Model S proved that EVs could meet any drivers’ needs and fit into any lifestyle. In 2015, the first Model X units rolled off our Fremont production lines, offering families a sustainable vehicle with ample seating and cargo space, while delivering first-class safety and performance. With automatic front doors and falcon wing second-row doors, Model X made it easier for drivers and passengers alike to access the first, second and third rows. This combined the practicality of a standard SUV or van with maximum performance.

Model S and Model X brought industry-first innovations to production vehicles that have since influenced car design globally. This includes a large center touchscreen integrating all controls, over-the-air software updates that enhance capabilities over time, fast charging power, advanced driver-assistance features with Autopilot, remote Service diagnostics, mobile app connectivity and more.

Globally, Model S and Model X have outperformed supercars in terms of their acceleration—and at a fraction of the price.

Model S and Model X Are Only Getting Better Over Time

Since their release, we’ve introduced numerous improvements and upgrades to both vehicles through free over-the-air software updates for existing owners or through our production lines with updated vehicle releases.

In 2021, we launched a redesign of Model S and Model X featuring a new powertrain, new chassis and redesigned exteriors and interiors. We considered every aspect of the design of Model S and Model X, from the tires to the glass roof, to enable them to better meet the needs of our drivers while retaining the identity that made the original vehicles so great.

Aiming to build the world’s best car, we unveiled Model S Plaid. With rotors wrapped in a carbon sleeve, our Plaid motor delivers a perfect power curve, making it quicker than anything else on the road, yet quiet, comfortable and practical for daily driving. We also developed Plaid Track Mode, which enabled Model S to set a lap record time for a production electric vehicle at Germany’s Nürburgring in 2021, and again in 2023 with our upgraded Track Package. This software upgrade allows for the precise adjustment of stability controls, handling balance and regenerative braking to give drivers more authority over their vehicle’s behavior on the racetrack.

Adopting this same Plaid powertrain, Model X became the world’s most powerful production SUV with 1020 bhp, capable of going from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds while carrying 6 passengers and all their gear.

We continuously take customer feedback to improve our vehicles – even incorporating improvements between major refresh cycles. With these latest improvements, Model S and Model X continue to offer maximum efficiency and comfort for daily driving, paired with unmatched performance and technology.
