Charge any EV at home with Tesla

Meet Universal Wall Connector

Charging your electric vehicle at home with Tesla is convenient and cost-effective, regardless of whether your EV is a Tesla. Tesla’s Universal Wall Connector features both NACS and J1772 standard plugs and can deliver up to 45 miles of range per hour of charge so you can charge any EV where you park, utilize low overnight utility rates and wake up ready to start your day. It features a clean design with seamless integration of the hardware and software, an easy-to-use app for tracking and monitoring your charging, and is configurable to operate within the limits of nearly any home’s electrical system.

Universal Wall Connector is one of two hard-wired “Level 2” home chargers offered by Tesla:

  • Wall Connector: Tesla’s original home charger, Wall Connector features the NACS (North American Charging Standard) plug type. NACS was developed by Tesla and is used by all Tesla vehicles. As the name suggests, NACS has been widely adopted by North America’s EV industry including many other electric vehicle manufacturers and standardized as SAE J3400.1
  • Universal Wall Connector: Universal Wall Connector has all the capability of Wall Connector and features both the NACS and J1772 charging standard plug type. With these, Universal Wall Connector can charge nearly any EV sold in North America today.2

When the plug is docked, simply press the button on the handle to release the J1772 plug type, or pull out by the handle to use the NACS plug type.

Universal Wall Connector Works With Any Electric Vehicle

The addition of the J1772 adapter makes the Universal Wall Connector compatible with nearly all EVs sold in North America today. With Universal Wall Connector, any EV driver can experience the convenience of viewing charge status and managing charger settings directly from the Tesla app, regardless of their EV’s own onboard capabilities. Through the app, users can set their preferred charging schedule, see charging history and stats, manage who can and cannot charge on their Wall Connector, and even receive remote diagnostics if necessary, for a convenient and reliable home charging experience. Users with Tesla residential energy equipment such as solar or Powerwall can also manage how these products interact with home charging in the app and enable advanced charging features such Charge on Solar.

Through the Tesla App, Universal Wall Connector users can set their preferred charging schedule, check their charge status and history, set access controls, and configure interaction with other Tesla home energy systems.

Installation and Power Delivery

The Tesla Universal Wall Connector can be installed on circuits ranging from 15 to 60 amps, with the maximum output determined by the size of the circuit breaker. This flexibility allows homeowners to tailor the installation to their electrical panel’s capacity and charging needs. The Universal Wall Connector also supports Group Power Management, allowing multiple chargers to be installed on a single circuit, intelligently distributing power between them. Finally, Dynamic Power Management can intelligently manage charge speed when other appliances in the home are being used to ensure total draw does not exceed power available at your home and cause an outage. In many cases this can even precent the need for costly upgrades to home electrical infrastructure such as your main panel.

  2. Smart Features: Wi-Fi connectivity enables over-the-air updates and integration with Tesla’s app ecosystem.
  3. Futureproofing: As more households adopt multiple EVs, the Wall Connector’s Group Power Management makes it easier to add additional charging units without costly electrical upgrades.
