Update Vehicle Firmware to Correct Loss of Back Up Camera Feed

Tesla has issued a voluntary recall on certain model year 2017 and 2021 - 2023 Model 3 vehicles, model year 2020 - 2023 Model Y vehicles, model year 2021 - 2023 Model S vehicles and model year 2021 - 2023 Model X vehicles manufactured between November 29, 2017 and January 3, 2024, and equipped with Hardware version 3, that are or were operating with a specific software version causing the rearview camera image to appear blank for up to 11 seconds upon shifting into reverse which does not comply with FMVSS 111, S5.5.3.

Software release 2026.8.6.1 or a later release ensures that the rear-view camera image display complies with FMVSS 111 S5.5.3. The updated software began rolling out over-the-air (OTA) to affected vehicles starting April 11, 2026.

Is my vehicle affected by this recall?

All owners can check if their VIN is affected by using either the Tesla VIN Recall Search or the NHTSA VIN Recall Search tools. At no cost to customers, affected vehicles received an over-the-air software remedy with software release 2026.8.6.1. Software release 2026.8.6.1 or a later release ensures that the rear-view camera image display complies with FMVSS 111 S5.5.3. No service visit is necessary, and no further action is necessary from owners whose vehicles are equipped with software release 2026.8.6.1 or a later release.

What is this issue and how does it affect my vehicle?

On affected vehicles, upon vehicle power up, a certain software configuration may prevent camera streams from being sent to the MCU for up to 11 seconds, causing a loss of rearview image for up to 11 seconds for drivers who shift into reverse during this time, which does not comply with FMVSS 111, S5.5.3.

Is my vehicle safe to drive?

A delayed rearview camera image may affect the driver’s rear view and increase the risk of a collision. The driver may continue to reverse the vehicle by performing a shoulder check and using their mirrors. Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths relating to this condition.

Do I need to make a service appointment for this recall?

No. This recall is addressed by updating the vehicle with software release 2026.8.6.1 or a later release and does not require the customer to schedule a service appointment.
