Model S and Model X Loss of Horn Function Recall
Tesla has issued a voluntary recall on a small number of model year 2021-2024 Model S and model year 2021-2025 Model X vehicles manufactured between May 13, 2021, and December 11, 2024, that were identified to have possibly consumed driver side airbag units with the incorrect horn type in service.
What is the issue?
On affected vehicles, a service operator may have installed an airbag with a non-mechanical horn pad in a mechanical steering wheel or an airbag with a mechanical horn pad in a non-mechanical steering wheel, resulting in a loss of horn functionality. Airbag functionality is unaffected.
Is my vehicle affected by this recall?
All owners can check if their VIN is affected by using either the Tesla VIN Recall Search or the NHTSA VIN Recall Search tools. However, if an owner did not have their vehicle’s steering wheel replaced in service, their vehicle will not be affected by this recall.
Is my vehicle safe to drive?
An inoperable horn may increase the risk of a collision. However, Tesla is not aware of any collisions, fatalities or injuries that are or may be related to the condition.
What is the recall remedy and how long does it take to perform?
At no charge to the customer, Tesla will inspect the driver airbag on all affected vehicles. If an incorrect driver airbag variant is identified, Tesla will replace it with the correct driver airbag variant for the steering wheel horn type configuration. The remedy repair should take no longer than 10 minutes to perform.
Do I need to make a service appointment for this recall?
To complete the remedy repair, schedule a service appointment using the Tesla app by selecting ‘Service' > ‘Request Service’ > 'Other' > 'Something Else' and entering the note “Open Recall Repair – Driver Airbag Inspection” into the 'Describe Concern' field.
