Update Vehicle Firmware to Reset Seat Belt Chime

Tesla issued a noncompliance recall on certain model year 2021-2022 Model S and Model X vehicles, and all Model 3 and Model Y vehicles built through late January 2022 for a software error, which may prevent the driver seat belt reminder chime from activating upon vehicle start under certain circumstances.

Software version 2021.43.101.1 and versions 2022.4.5 or later correct the software error. Software version 2022.4.5 is expected to deploy over-the-air (OTA) beginning in early February 2022.

Is my car affected by this recall?

All owners can check if their VIN is affected by using either the Tesla VIN Recall Search or NHTSA VIN Recall Search tools. If your vehicle is running software version 2021.43.101.1 or 2022.4.5 or later, your vehicle is not subject to this issue. You can confirm your vehicle’s software version by tapping ‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ on your touchscreen.

What is this issue and how does it affect my vehicle?

A software error may prevent the driver seat belt chime from activating upon vehicle start under certain circumstances. This condition is limited to circumstances where the chime was interrupted in the preceding drive cycle and the seat belt was not buckled subsequent to that interruption (e.g., the driver exited the vehicle in the preceding drive cycle while the chime was active and later returned to the vehicle, creating a new drive cycle).

Is my car safe to drive?

When this condition triggers under the circumstances specified above, it only prevents the driver seat belt reminder chime from sounding upon starting the vehicle. The condition does not affect the reliability or accuracy of the accompanying visual seat belt reminder under any circumstances. A separate seat belt reminder chime activates when the vehicle exceeds 13.7 mph.

Although we are not aware of any crashes or injuries related to this condition, remember to fasten your seat belt prior to driving.

Do I need to make a service appointment for this recall?

No. This recall is addressed by updating the vehicle software, which does not require the customer to schedule a service appointment.
