Trade-Ins

We accept passenger cars, trucks, vans and SUVs for trade-in value toward a new or pre-owned Tesla vehicle purchase. Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and electric vehicles (EV) are acceptable for trade-in.

We do not accept motorcycles, RVs or commercial vehicles.

Before you place an order, get an estimate of your trade-in vehicle by submitting your VIN. The final offer for your trade-in vehicle will be available after you place your order, subject to a physical inspection. You must submit your VIN, odometer mileage, zip code and damage history. Additionally, photos of the vehicle may be requested in the Tesla app to receive a trade-in offer. We will notify you when your trade-in offer is ready.

If you accept the final trade-in offer, you must upload a photo of your vehicle title or your registration certificate if you are actively financing, leasing or if your vehicle is titled in a lienholder held state.

We will review the documents uploaded and compare it with the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) to ensure your vehicle is in good standing.

Note: Additional information or action may be required if there are discrepancies, stipulations or if your vehicle is determined to not be in good standing.

Once we have approved your trade-in, your trade-in vehicle must be dropped off during your scheduled delivery appointment. At this time, you must hand over the vehicle title and lien release, if applicable.

Note: If you are taking delivery in IA, MI, OK or TX, we will be mailing your trade-in documents which are required to be executed and returned prior to your scheduled delivery date. Contact your local Delivery team if you have questions regarding this process.

Once the trade-in is complete, you must also notify your state of the trade-in sale and ensure you are no longer liable for the vehicle after the date of sale.

You must renew your expired registration if your trade-in vehicle is titled in the following states: CA.

You must renew your expired registration if your trade-in vehicle is actively financed and titled in the following states: CT, HI, NH, NJ, SD, UT, VT.

Note: All trade-in vehicles must be in good standing with the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS). Additional information or action may be required if there are discrepancies, stipulations or if your vehicle is determined to not be in good standing.

Reported damage, mechanical issues and/or modifications on your vehicle are not accounted for in your trade-in estimate. They will be accounted for during the final offer stage once your order has been placed.

Your ability to include some or all of the negative equity in a new financing agreement depends on the specific bank and the amount of negative equity you want to include. Current indirect Tesla financing partners have the flexibility to finance amounts exceeding 100% loan-to-value (LTV) on credit approval. However, it is important to note that financing over 100% LTV may lead to an increase in your Annual Percentage Rate (APR). Any financing request exceeding 100% LTV can be applied to cover taxes and negative equity. In states where upfront taxes are not collected, financing over 100% LTV can be exclusively directed toward covering negative equity.

We may ask you to submit various photos to help us evaluate the vehicle's condition. You may be asked to provide:

• 4 clear photos in the daylight of the exterior 
• 1 of the entire driver side of the vehicle 
• 1 of the entire reverse side of the vehicle 
• 1 of the entire passenger side of the vehicle 
• 1 of the entire front side of the vehicle 
• 1 photo of the interior of the vehicle 

In addition to the above, you must also submit clear photos of any vehicle damage. All photos must be taken outdoors in daylight. Photos taken inside of a garage are not accepted.

Yes but some lessors impose restrictions on allowing active leases to be bought out. Below is a list of some of these lessors that no longer allow third-party buyouts for their leased vehicles. Before placing your order, contact your lender to verify any third-party buyout restrictions.

Yes. You can trade in your vehicle if you are still making finance payments. We will calculate and compare the pay-off amount and any equity (positive or negative) that will be added to your Motor Vehicle Purchase Agreement.

Note: Refrain from paying off your lease or loan in full prior to trading in your vehicle. Any delays in the title receipt may delay your delivery date.

If you are actively financing your trade-in and your title is held by a lender in one of these states, request a ‘Letter of Guarantee’ or upload a digital photo of the title from your lienholder to the Tesla app prior to your delivery appointment.

Trade-in vehicles must be properly titled in the U.S. to be eligible for trade-in. A physical title is typically required at delivery if you are not actively financing or leasing your trade-in vehicle or if you are making finance payments in the following states: KY, MD, MI, MN, MO, MT, NY, OK, WY.

If you have misplaced or lost your title and are unable to obtain a duplicate title prior to your scheduled delivery date, contact your local Delivery team to see if you are eligible for a title exception.

Note: If applicable, submit photos of your current registration certificate or lien release when accepting the final offer. We will use these photos to review your case.

Tesla will accept trade-in vehicles from outside of the U.S. on a case-by-case basis, with proper import records supplied and the odometer reading listed in miles.

Non-Tesla vehicles with a salvage, rebuilt, lemon, junk, recycled or not actual miles (NAM) branded title are eligible for a trade-in so long as the vehicle’s title branding has been completed accurately with the relevant state. The face of your vehicle title should display the appropriate branding or the vehicle will not qualify for a trade-in.

Yes. You must disclose any important information about your vehicle that would affect the value during the trade-in process.

Non-Tesla inoperable vehicles are not eligible for trade-in. Inoperable Tesla vehicles may be eligible for trade-in on a case-by-case basis.

We do not accept any trade-in vehicles that have a bonded title.

Trade-in vehicle titles that are incorrectly signed, defaced or altered are not typically acceptable.

The trade-in vehicle title’s listed owner(s) must be able to attend the delivery to sign trade-in documents.

If the owner(s) listed on the title are unable to attend, visit your local DMV prior to your delivery date to transfer the title’s ownership to your name.

A copy of your legal marriage certificate or a court ordered petition for name change are acceptable as proof of a legal name change.

We accept trade-ins with ownership reflecting a trust. You must upload clear copies of your trust packet in your Tesla Account and all listed trustees must be present at delivery to sign the trade-in documents.

We do not accept more than one trade-in vehicle toward the purchase of a new or pre-owned vehicle.

Starting October 30, 2025, when you trade in your gas or hybrid vehicle for a new Tesla vehicle, you will receive 2,000 miles of free Supercharging. If you started the trade-in process before October 30, 2025, and you haven’t taken delivery of your new vehicle, you may also be eligible to receive 2,000 miles of free Supercharging. If you are eligible, you will receive your free Supercharging miles when you take delivery of your new Tesla vehicle. Your Supercharging miles will expire two years after your delivery date. Supercharger-related fees like congestion fees will still apply when charging your new Tesla vehicle.

Once you place your order, you will be asked to submit your trade-in details in your Tesla app. Once submitted, we will provide a trade-in offer based on current market conditions.

You can view your trade-in offer in the Tesla app by following these steps:

2. Open your pre-delivery tasks.
3. Navigate to the ‘Trade-In’ section to find your trade-in offer.

If your offer is still under review, you'll see the status 'Trade-In Offer Pending.'

Yes. You can remove your trade-in vehicle from your order by following these steps:

1. Open the Tesla app.
2. Open your pre-delivery tasks.
3. Navigate to the ‘Trade-In’ section.
4. Next to your offer, tap ‘Review’ > ‘Reject Trade-In Offer.’
5. Select a reason and tap ‘Submit.’

The trade-in offer we provide is the best offer we can make within the current market conditions. Trade-in offers are not negotiable and we do not match competing offers.

Trade-in values for non-Tesla vehicles are determined based on market data utilizing industry standard tools and resources (pending vehicle history verification).

Trade-in values for Tesla vehicles are determined based on vehicle configuration, history, mileage and age. The resulting value is based on information you provide us about the vehicle, market data and internal Tesla product knowledge.

Yes. Your trade-in final offer will expire after 30 days or 1,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Yes. Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) will be taken into account when evaluating your trade-in.

Aftermarket vehicle modifications typically have a negative effect on trade-in valuations. It is best for trade-in vehicles to be in ‘stock’ or original state.

In addition to adding credit toward your vehicle purchase, several states offer an incentive for trading in your vehicle in the form of a sales tax credit. You may be eligible for this if you live in one of the following states: AR, AZ, CO, CT, FL, ID, IN, KS, MA, MN, MO, NC, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, PA, TN, TX, UT, WA, WV, WY.

If applicable, the value of your trade-in vehicle will be subtracted from the purchase price of your new Tesla vehicle before state sales tax is calculated, allowing you to pay less sales tax at the time of your final payment. For example, if you are purchasing a new Tesla vehicle for $60,000 and you are trading in a vehicle valued at $10,000, the sales tax for your purchase would be calculated as if you were purchasing a $50,000 vehicle.

You will pay the sales tax for the entire purchase price upfront if you live in one of the following states: CA, GA, HI, MD, SC. However, you may receive a tax credit accounting for the extra sales tax when you file your state taxes.

No. Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) will not transfer from your trade in vehicle to your new Tesla vehicle.

All trade-ins must be dropped off during your scheduled delivery appointment. We cannot accept trade-ins before or after your scheduled delivery appointment.

Trade-ins must be dropped off at your assigned delivery location during your scheduled delivery appointment.

All owner(s) listed on the trade-in vehicle title and/or registration must be present at delivery to sign the trade-in documentation. Failure to have these individuals present could result in delayed delivery.

We are not responsible for reporting the trade-in transaction to your state’s motor vehicle department. You may be required to notify your state’s motor vehicle department of the pending transaction after your trade-in documents are complete and your trade-in vehicle has been transferred to us. For additional details, check with your state’s motor vehicle department.

Before trading in your vehicle, the vehicle owner must clear any data and restore it to factory settings. This ensures that all your personal information is removed before you trade in your vehicle. We will not check whether you have cleared your data and we are not responsible for ensuring that your personal data is removed from your trade-in vehicle.

If you are trading in a non-Tesla vehicle, check your owner’s manual for guidance on removing your data. If you are trading in a Tesla vehicle, tap ‘Controls’ > ‘Service’ > ‘Factory Reset’ on your touchscreen to clear your data and restore to factory settings.

If you sell or trade in your vehicle that is currently enrolled in Full Self-Driving (Supervised), it is not transferable to your new Tesla vehicle.

Trade-in vehicles cannot be returned once trade-in documents are signed, the vehicle is in our possession and the transaction is complete. For additional details, review your Trade-In Annex.

Contact the delivery location where you dropped off your trade-in vehicle as soon as possible. If the vehicle is still on-site, a representative will work with you to recover your belongings. However, once the vehicle is in transit to its next location, lost items can no longer be retrieved.

Note: Tesla is not responsible for items left in trade-in vehicles. We will make reasonable efforts to recover lost items but cannot guarantee their return or condition. We will not reimburse or otherwise compensate you for any lost or damaged items.
