Australia

Electric Vehicle Registration & Tax: Luxury Car Tax

In Australia, fuel efficient vehicles attract less Luxury Car Tax, leading to a saving of up to $3,246. The Luxury Car Tax is levied at 33c on each dollar above a certain threshold. For most cars that threshold is $80,567 for the 2025-2026 financial year. However, for fuel efficient vehicles including Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y, that threshold is $91,387.

The Australian Government passed the Treasury Laws Amendment (Electric Car Discount) Act 2022 which exempts eligible zero or low emissions vehicles first registered after 1 July 2022 from the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT). For the 2025-2026 financial year, electric vehicles with a value of up to $91,387 (including GST) may be eligible for this FBT exemption. FBT exemption eligibility criteria apply and are subject to change. Customers should confirm their eligibility prior to purchasing any vehicle and seek independent professional advice.
