Powerwall 3 Calibration
Powerwall 3 periodically calibrates to ensure optimal battery performance. Calibration ensures that your Powerwall 3 continues to operate accurately and efficiently for your home.
Note: The calibration process is normal and is not an indication of any issues with your Powerwall 3.
When Will Calibration Happen
Due to normal cycling of the battery during daily use, calibration can occur naturally and will have no impact on your system’s operation. However, if daily cycling is not sufficient, the system will undergo a dedicated calibration cycle every 30-90 days.
How to Know When Calibration Is in Progress
When your Powerwall 3 is undergoing calibration, you will see a ‘Calibration in Progress’ banner in the Tesla app. This banner will remain visible until the process is complete.
What to Expect During Calibration
To complete calibration, Powerwall 3 must charge to 100% state of charge and occasionally discharge below 20%.
During calibration:
- Your Powerwall 3 may discharge beyond your backup reserve.
- Solar may not power your home loads or charge the Powerwall 3 during the process.
- Your Powerwall 3 may temporarily ignore your Grid Charging and Energy Exports settings. It will not violate any utility restrictions.
The time to complete calibration varies from system to system. However, certain site conditions may cause calibration to take longer such as:
- Utility-imposed import or export restrictions
- Busbar protection features (panel limits)
- Powerwall 3 permanent power limitation due to site conditions
The above restrictions limit the ability to charge and discharge, and as a result, increase the time it takes to complete the required calibration cycling. Once your Powerwall 3 is in calibration for 72 hours, it will exit the process and re-attempt calibration in the future.
Powerwall 3 will exit calibration in the following situations:
- Off-Grid Event: Calibration will stop when there is a grid outage. Your Powerwall 3 will provide the backup power you expect.
- Storm Watch: During a Storm Watch event, calibration will stop and your Powerwall 3 will charge to protect your home in case there is a grid outage.
- VPP Events: If your Powerwall 3 is participating in a VPP event, calibration will stop and your system will fully participate.
