Update Vehicle Firmware to Correct Brake Fluid Level Sensor
Tesla has voluntarily issued a non-compliance recall on certain model year 2021-2023 Model X vehicles to correct the vehicle controller’s set threshold range at low brake fluid levels. Affected vehicles were identified based upon a review of manufacturing records.
Software version 2023.32.7 or newer includes the remedy that corrects the vehicle controller’s set threshold range at low brake fluid levels and ensures compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 135, Section 5.5.4.
On September 28, 2023, software release 2023.32.7 began deploying over-the-air (OTA) to affected vehicles not operating FSD Beta software. For vehicles operating FSD Beta software, the above remedy will be included in software version 2023.27.7 (FSD 11.4.7.3). Both software releases are deployed OTA at no cost to owners.
Is my vehicle affected by this recall?
All owners can check if their VIN is affected by using either the Tesla VIN Recall Search or NHTSA VIN Recall Search tools.
What is this issue and how does it affect my vehicle?
On certain model year 2021-2023 Model X vehicles, the vehicle controller’s set threshold range may not be set at the correct range to accurately detect low brake fluid levels, which may result in noncompliance with FMVSS 135, Section 5.5.4. Low brake fluid levels may alter brake pedal feel or impact braking performance.
Is my vehicle safe to drive?
A vehicle controller that does not correctly indicate low brake fluid levels to the owner may impact braking performance and may increase the risk of a collision. Tesla is not aware of any crashes, injuries or deaths that may be related to this condition.
Do I need to make a service appointment for this recall?
No. This recall is addressed by updating the vehicle software to version 2023.32.7 or newer and does not require the owner to schedule a service appointment.
Owners of affected vehicles operating FSD Beta software will receive the remedy in software version 2023.27.7 (FSD 11.4.7.3). Similarly, no service visit is necessary to address this recall.
What if my software update fails to download or install?
Software updates may fail for a number of reasons. If you are having issues updating your vehicle software, refer to the Software Updates support page. If the issue persists, schedule a service appointment.
