Maintenance Plans | Model S and Model X
Tesla Annual Service Inspection
Unlike gasoline cars, Tesla vehicles require no traditional oil changes, fuel filter, spark plug replacements, or emission checks. As an electric vehicle, even brake pad replacements are rare because regenerative braking returns energy to the battery, significantly reducing wear on brakes. Our inspections instead focus on checking wheel alignment and tire condition, assessing replacement parts like key fob batteries and windshield wiper blades, and installing the latest software update. Tesla recommends an annual service inspection for Model S and Model X every year or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first, to maintain your vehicle to top performance standards.
Advanced payment of annual service inspections via a Maintenance Plan is the most economical means of maintaining your vehicle. Model S and Model X Maintenance Plans may be purchased by logging into your Tesla account or by visiting a local Tesla Service Center.
3-Year Maintenance Plan
Term: 3 years or 37,500 miles, whichever comes first. Includes 3 inspections total, one every 12 months or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first.
4-Year Maintenance Plan

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an annual service inspection and a Maintenance Plan?
An annual service inspection is the recommended service that is performed on a vehicle every 12 months or 12,500 miles, whichever comes first. Maintenance Plans are agreements for multiple annual service inspections paid in advance.
Can anyone purchase a Maintenance Plan?
Owners (excluding 3rd party dealers and vehicles purchased from a 3rd party dealer) with Model S or X vehicles subject to the New Vehicle Limited Warranty or Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty which are still within the eligible purchase period are eligible to purchase a Maintenance Plan.
What is the eligible purchase period for Maintenance Plans?
Maintenance Plans must be purchased within 12 months or 12,500 miles (whichever comes first) after the original delivery date of a new or pre-owned vehicle by Tesla, giving you up until the first annual service inspection to purchase. You are not required to purchase a Tesla Maintenance Plan and are able to pay for your individual annual service inspections upon each scheduled service. Tesla Maintenance Plans are simply prepaying at a discounted rate for your annual service inspections. See the Tesla Maintenance Plan Terms and Conditions for further details.
Why are some annual service inspection prices different between years and vehicles?
Activities performed during annual inspections differ according to year of servicing; hence, pricing reflects the actual work performed. Tesla is determined to provide world-class service to our customers at a fair price that reflects actual work performed.
What happens during my annual service inspection?
During your annual service inspection, our expert Tesla Service team will take your vehicle through a bumper to bumper, roof to wheel inspection. The wheels will be removed and tires will be rotated, if necessary. A wheel alignment check is performed as well as an adjustment, if necessary. Logs will be pulled and examined; all systems will be tested; and the temperature management system will be checked. The drive unit(s) will be serviced every 4th inspection, starting with the first annual service inspection. Your brakes will be inspected. If the brake pads are outside of recommended specifications, they can be replaced for an additional charge. Tread wear is inspected and if new tires are needed, additional charges will apply. Please note that tire replacement is not covered as part of the annual inspection, Tesla Maintenance Plan, New Vehicle Limited Warranty, or Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty.
If I drive 25,000 miles in a year, do I need 2 inspections?
The annual service inspection interval is prompted by either time or mileage, whichever comes first. For example, if you drive 25,000 miles in one year, you’ll want to have your vehicle inspected twice, once at 12,500 miles and the following at 25,000 miles. If you drive 6,250 miles in one year, you’ll want to have your vehicle inspected once a year.
Note: Tesla requires that annual service inspections be performed within 1,000 miles or 30 days (whichever comes first) of the specified annual service inspection intervals for the selected Maintenance Plan.
How often do I need to bring my Tesla Vehicle in for maintenance service?
Tesla recommends that you bring your Tesla vehicle into the nearest Tesla Service Center for an annual service inspection once every 12 months or every 12,500 miles (whichever comes first). Please use our Find Us page to find a Tesla Service Center near you.
If I choose not to service my Tesla vehicle, will this void my warranty?
It is highly recommended that you service your Tesla vehicle every 12 months or every 12,500 miles, whichever comes first. If you do not follow this recommendation, your New Vehicle Limited Warranty or Pre-Owned Vehicle Limited Warranty will not be affected. During the agreement period of the Extended Service Agreement, your coverage may be affected if recommended service is not performed. See the Tesla Extended Service Plan Terms and Conditions for further details.
How will I remember to bring my Tesla vehicle in for annual service inspection on time?
The best way to ensure your Tesla vehicle is regularly serviced is to set up an appointment on your delivery day. You can do this with our Service Team at the time of delivery or give them a call after your appointment. Click here for Tesla Service Center contact information.
How often should I rotate my tires?
We recommend that you bring your Tesla vehicle in to have the tires rotated every 6,250 miles. Tire rotations are included in the annual service inspection. Tire rotations performed in between annual service inspections are charged separately.
Do I have to take my vehicle to a Tesla Service Center?
It is always best to bring your vehicle into a Tesla Service Center for any service needs. If you choose to bring your vehicle to a non-Tesla shop for any maintenance or repairs, please be aware that if problems occur, this could affect coverage under your warranty.
Why am I unable to purchase Tesla Maintenance Plans in my state?
In some states Tesla has not been granted approval by the state to sell Tesla Maintenance Plans. This is because each state has its own requirements, such as specific licenses or business qualifications, which we are working to acquire. If you live in a state where Tesla Maintenance Plans is not yet available, you are still able and encouraged to have your Tesla vehicle serviced by your nearest Tesla Service Center each year or every 12,500 miles. You will always receive the same service to your vehicle as someone with a Tesla Maintenance Plan.
Can I transfer my Tesla Maintenance Plan to the new owner if I sell my Tesla vehicle?
Yes, you can transfer the unused portion of your Tesla Maintenance Plan with the sale of your vehicle. The plan will transfer to the new owner when the vehicle ownership transfer is processed through Tesla. Please refer to the Maintenance Plan Terms and Conditions for more information.
Can Tesla Maintenance Plans be added to the cost of the vehicle when financing Model S or X?
Tesla Maintenance Plans cannot be added to the total cost of your Model S or X, whether you are financing or not. These plans can only be purchased separately.
Can I cancel my Tesla Maintenance Plan? Can I upgrade or downgrade my Tesla Maintenance Plan?
Yes, you can request to cancel your Maintenance Plan at any time and receive a refund for the remaining unused annual service inspection intervals, excluding any forfeited inspection intervals. Please refer to the Maintenance Plan Terms and Conditions for your Tesla for more information.
You cannot downgrade or upgrade your Tesla Maintenance Plan once you have purchased.
