Tesla Electric for Vehicle Owners

If you are a Tesla vehicle owner who was previously enrolled in Tesla Electric, find information below. You will remain on your current contract and will be offered to re-enroll in either Tesla Electric Fixed or Tesla Electric Dynamic. Tesla Electric offers a home electricity plan for Tesla vehicle owners. The Tesla Electric Home Charging Plan gives customers the opportunity to lower the cost of vehicle ownership and power their homes with clean electricity. Simply plug in your vehicle between 10 PM and 6 AM and enjoy unlimited overnight, home charging for a low fixed monthly fee. Our Home Charging Plan also allows you to power your home and charge your vehicles throughout the day at a low, flat rate. Currently, Tesla Electric is only available in areas of Texas where customers can choose their home electricity provider.

To get started, tap the menu in the top-right corner of the Tesla app. Select the ‘Discover’ tab and locate the Tesla Electric card. Once you tap the card, you will see a general overview of Tesla Electric and will be allowed to sign up. Start the sign-up process by entering your address or electrical service identifier (ESI-ID) manually.

If You Qualify for Tesla Electric

If you qualify for Tesla Electric, complete the sign-up process by following the remaining steps:

Enter your preferred date to start your Tesla Electric service.

Select how many vehicles you want enrolled in Tesla Electric. Your vehicles will be automatically scheduled to charge overnight. However, you can opt out of this by unchecking the scheduled charging prompt.
Set up your payment details to enable autopay. Currently, we only accept payments from your bank account. Credit card payments are not accepted.
Once your sign up is complete, you will receive an email confirmation.

Note: You can expect to see your Tesla Electric service activated within a few hours (if you signed up during the week) or a couple of days (if you signed up during the weekend).

If You Do Not Qualify for Tesla Electric

If your address or ESI-ID does not return as a match, you do not qualify to join Tesla Electric at this time.

How it Works

Once you have started your Tesla Electric service, Tesla measures the energy that you use to charge your vehicles and to power your home.

With the Tesla Electric Home Charging Plan, you will:

Pay a low fixed monthly fee for vehicle charging sessions between 10 PM and 6 AM.
Pay a flat home electricity rate for vehicle charging sessions between 6 AM and 10 PM.
Pay a flat home electricity rate for energy used to power your home.

How to Take Advantage of Overnight Charging

With the Tesla Electric Home Charging Plan, you will always pay the same fixed fee, no matter how much you charge your vehicle overnight. Take full advantage by making sure your vehicle is set to schedule charging. If your vehicle is not set to schedule charging, a reminder will appear on the charging card while your vehicle is charging. You can also monitor how much your vehicle has charged overnight through the ‘Charge Stats’ card in the Tesla app.

How to Make Payments

You can manage your Tesla Electric bills by signing in to the Tesla app and tapping ‘Billing’ on the Tesla Electric home screen. You can adjust your autopay settings, make a one-time payment and view your statements or payment history.

Understanding Your Tesla Electric Bill

Your bill will reflect the following:

Daytime energy usage: Energy used to charge your vehicle energy from 6 AM to 10 PM
Overnight energy usage: Overnight vehicle charging fees
Home energy usage: Energy used to power your home
TDSP charges: Transmission and Delivery (TDSP) fees
Taxes

For each vehicle enrolled in the Home Charging Plan, you will pay a low fixed monthly fee. This fee will cover all vehicle charging performed during overnight hours of 10 PM – 6 AM (shown as a $0/kWh rate). It will also cover any TDSP fees associated with overnight charging.

Energy used to power your home throughout the day and charge your vehicle outside the overnight hours will appear on the bill at the usual home electricity rate. This also includes any associated TDSP charges.

How to Change Your Payment Method

If you want to update your payment method, follow these steps:

Navigate to the ‘Tesla Electric’ banner in your Tesla app.
Tap ‘Billing’ > ‘Payments.’
Select your current payment method underneath your billing address.
Tap ‘Add bank account’ to add your new payment information.

How to Make a One-Time Payment

If your autopay fails to go through, you can opt to make a one-time payment by following these steps:

Navigate to the ‘Tesla Electric’ banner in your Tesla app.
Tap ‘Billing’ > ‘Make a one-time payment.’
Confirm your payment details and submit to complete your payment.

To be able to sign up with Tesla Electric, your vehicle must have software version 2023.20.4 or higher. Learn how you can check your vehicle’s current software version.

To make sure you get the latest updates, select ‘ADVANCED’ to receive software updates as soon as they become available for your vehicle configuration and region and make sure your vehicle has a stable Wi-Fi connection so that it can download the latest software updates.

Tesla Electric is compatible with vehicles featuring the Intel Atom or the AMD Ryzen processors in their infotainment computer. To see which infotainment processor your vehicle uses, tap ‘Controls’ > ‘Software’ > ‘Additional Vehicle Information’ on your vehicle infotainment screen.

Note: To access unlimited charging, enable data sharing on your Tesla vehicle’s touchscreen and ensure that your charging location is connected to the utility meter linked to your Tesla Electric enrollment.
Your ESI-ID is a 17 or 22 digit number that identifies your electrical service location. This number is unique to your home. You can find your ESI-ID on your current electricity provider’s utility bills. If you can’t find a good match for your address when signing up for Tesla Electric, you can enter your ESI-ID manually. If your ESI-ID does not return a match, then you are not eligible to sign up with Tesla Electric at this time.

It may sometimes be difficult to compare home electricity plans to decide which is right for your home energy needs.

All home electricity plans in Texas show an average electricity rate, $/kWh, which is displayed in the Electricity Facts Label (EFL). Some plans offer “free” electricity at night or on weekends but feature expensive rates during all other times. Other plans may offer a high fixed charge and credit you for your first 1,000 kWhs and a relatively high rate when you exceed that consumption. While these plans may seem attractive, they can often be unpredictable.

We’ve designed Tesla Electric to be transparent, simple and sustainable for homeowners. We offer a single flat home electricity rate to power your home and vehicle and a fixed fee to charge your vehicle at home as much as you need between 10 PM and 6 AM. Our Tesla Electric Home Charging Plan is ideal for those who will do most of their vehicle charging at home and drive their vehicle(s) regularly.

While we update our plan regularly to stay competitive with the market, you can always compare plans using tools such as the Public Utility Commission of Texas’ Power to Choose tool.
You can expect your first billing statement shortly after we receive your first monthly meter reading. Generally, we’ll receive your first monthly meter reading within 30 days of your service start date. If you switch to Tesla Electric towards the end of your billing cycle, it may take slightly longer. Your monthly meter reading tells electricity providers how much energy you have used.
Yes. Tesla Electric offers Solar Buyback at 90% of the real-time energy market price during each 15-minute interval of the day. There is no set buyback rate, and the rate fluctuates every 15 minutes based on the spot price of energy in the ERCOT market. You can still access the unlimited overnight vehicle charging, power your home with solar production and be compensated in the form of credits for excess solar that is sent back to the grid. You can request a digital payout to your bank account for any amount of excess credit, of at least $10 or more, accumulated during a given billing period.
Any excess credits accumulated during a given billing period will appear on your next Tesla Electric bill. You can cash out your excess credits in the Tesla app by following these steps:
1. Tap ‘Tesla Electric’ > ‘Billing.’ If you have any excess credits, you will see the amount.
2. Tap ‘Request Payout.’
3. Enter your bank account details.
4. Tap ‘Submit.’
Note: You must be enrolled with Tesla Electric for at least one year before you are eligible for payouts. Until you reach one year, any excess credits will roll over to the next bill. Excess credit value less than $10 will automatically roll over to your next bill.
These are the charges that come from your local Transmission Distribution Service Provider (TDSP). They are also known as your utility company or Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU). The TDSP charges are a mix of consumption-based fees and standard monthly charges. You’ll see these two types of charges itemized on your billing statement. TDSP charges may fluctuate depending on your usage and if your local utility company increases or decreases their fees.
