Two Installation Methods

Informational PurposesAn informational icon, calling your attention
Note
Always install child restraint systems by following the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the child restraint system.

Among many other variants, there are two general types of child restraint systems based on how they are secured in the seat:

Some child restraint systems can be installed using either method. Refer to the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the child restraint system to determine which installation method to use and for detailed installation instructions.

In Model Y, belt-based child restraints can be installed in any passenger seat and ISOFIX/i-Size systems can be installed in either of the second row outboard seats. Specific details about the type of child restraint system that can be used in each seat is provided next.

Informational PurposesAn informational icon, calling your attention
Note
ISOFIX and i-Size are international standards for integrated anchors used in passenger vehicles to attach child safety seats.
Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
Warning
Do not use ISOFIX/i-Size anchors with child restraint system or booster seats that have an integral safety belt where the combined weight of the child plus the child restraint system exceeds 33 kg.

Installing Belt-based Child Restraint Systems

Always follow the detailed instructions provided by the manufacturer of the child restraint system. Follow these general guidelines for belt-based child restraint systems:

  • Ensure that the child restraint system is appropriate for the weight, height, and age of the child.
  • Avoid dressing the child in bulky clothing.
  • Do not place any objects between the child and the child restraint system.
  • Adjust the child restraint system's harnesses for every child, every trip.
  1. Place the child restraint system in the appropriate seat and fully extend the seat belt. Route and buckle the seat belt in accordance with the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the child restraint system.
  2. Allow the seat belt to retract, and remove all slack in the seat belt while firmly pushing the child restraint system into the vehicle's seat.
  3. Attach the upper tether strap(s), as required by the manufacturer of the child restraint system (see Attaching Upper Tether Straps).

Installing ISOFIX/i-Size Child Restraint Systems

Second row outboard and third row seating positions are equipped with ISOFIX/i-Size anchor bars. These anchor bars are located between the seat's cushion and back rest. The exact location of each anchor bar is identified by a marking located on the seat back, directly above its associated anchor bars.

Informational PurposesAn informational icon, calling your attention
Note
Illustrations are provided to improve conceptual understanding only. Depending on vehicle configuration purchased and market region, the design may differ.

In the second row, install ISOFIX/iSize child safety seats in the outboard seating positions only. Use only a seat belt retained seat in the center position (if equipped).

To install an ISOFIX/i-Size child restraint system, carefully read and follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the child restraint system. These instructions describe how to slide the child restraint system onto the seat’s anchor bars until you hear it "click" into place. You may need to push the child restraint system firmly against the seat back to ensure it fits snugly.

Adjust until the child restraint system is fitted firmly against the seat back. Ensure the child restraint system fits snugly.

Before seating a child, ensure that the child restraint system is securely installed. Grasp the front of the child restraint system with one hand on each side, and attempt to:

  • Twist the child restraint system from side to side.
  • Pull the child restraint system away from the seat.

If the child restraint system rotates or moves away from the seat, both latches are not fully engaged onto the seat's anchor bars. You must reinstall it and try again. It is critical that both latches on the child restraint system are fully engaged.

Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
Warning
Do not use ISOFIX/i-Size anchors with child restraint system or booster seats that have an integral safety belt where the combined weight of the child plus the child restraint system exceeds 33 kg.

Safety Leg

All passenger seats Model Y support the use of a child restraint system with a safety leg. If the child restraint system is equipped with a leg, extend the leg as described in the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the child restraint system.

Attaching Upper Tether Straps

If an upper tether strap is provided, attach its hook to the anchor point located behind the seat.

Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
Warning
Tighten upper tether straps according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the child safety seat.
Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
Warning
Use only seat belt retained child safety seats in the center seating position (if equipped).

Make sure the hook is fully seated on the anchor point.

5-Seater

For dual-strap tethers in the outboard seating positions, position a strap on each side of the head support.

For single-strap tethers in the outboard seating positions, run the strap over the outside-facing side of the head support (same side of the head support as the seat belt retraction mechanism).

If routing the strap over the outside-facing side of the head support is not possible (such as there is not enough slack in the strap), raise the head support and route the strap under the head support.

For single- and dual-strap tethers in the rear center seat, position the straps over the head support. Do not raise the head support or attempt to route the tether under the head support.

6-Seater

Second Row Seats

For single-strap tethers, route the straps over the top of the head support.

When using a dual-strap tether, a splitter plate provided by the child seat manufacturer must be used to converge the straps into a single top tether over the top of the head support.

Third Row Seats

For single-strap tethers, position a strap on the outside-facing side of the head support (same side of the head support as the seat belt retraction mechanism).

For dual-strap tethers, position a strap on each side of the head support.

Smart Child Seat App

Informational PurposesAn informational icon, calling your attention
Note
Tesla recommends enabling Walk-Away Door Lock before using the Smart Child Seat app (see Walk-Away Door Lock). Tesla also recommends not enabling Exclude Home so the vehicle locks at all times.

You can connect the BabyFirst 156H or Babyfirst R155H Joy Pro-Z child seat to your vehicle’s rear seats and access controls to keep your child safe.

Informational PurposesAn informational icon, calling your attention
Note
Refer to the child seat manufacturer’s instructions for optimal installation and seating positions.

Pairing

Your vehicle supports up to two smart child seats installed in the rear. Refer to the child seat manufacturer’s instructions for optimal installation and seating positions.

On the touchscreen, navigate to the Smart Child Seat app from the bottom bar. Then, Model Y automatically begins scanning for nearby BLE child seats. When the correct child seat appears, select Connect > Add Child Seat. The child seat is now added to the Seats tab of the app, and you can customize the name of the seat to your preferences.

Informational PurposesAn informational icon, calling your attention
Note
You may need to power the seat with the accompanying USB cable, lightly press on the child seat, or buckle and unbuckle the seat belt to wake the seat if it is not immediately detected.
Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
Warning
Pairing the child seat to the vehicle does not happen automatically. You must add the seat and connect it using the Smart Child Seat app for it to be paired.

Once a new seat is paired, a status page on the Seats tab displays whether the child is properly seated, buckled in, and whether the child seat is correctly secured to the ISOFIX connections in the seat (see Installing ISOFIX/i-Size Child Restraint Systems). If the ISOFIX status is not correctly detected, a notification appears immediately on the touchscreen and remains there until the ISOFIX connections are installed correctly. You may also receive notifications on the touchscreen if the buckle status is incorrect or a previously connected child seat is not detected, prompting you to manually check the child seat's status.

Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
Warning
It is ultimately your responsibility to ensure your child is safely and securely seated in the child seat, and the child seat it securely connected to the vehicle. The Smart Child Seat app and child presence detection systems are not a substitute for adequate supervision.

Exiting the Vehicle

Upon exiting Model Y, if the app still detects a child's weight or a buckled in seat belt (indicating a child may be left in the vehicle), a loud alarm sounds, exterior lights flash, and you receive a mobile app notification on your authenticated phone. Return to you vehicle immediately.

Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
Warning
The alarm, lights, and mobile app notification do not occur if the vehicle remains unlocked after exiting (such as when Walk-Away Door Lock is not enabled and you forget to manually lock Model Y or you have settings such as Exclude Home enabled). Tesla recommends enabling Walk-Away Door Lock at all times. See Walk-Away Door Lock for more information.
Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
Warning
It is your responsibility to always ensure there are no occupants in the vehicle before exiting.
Warning IconA warning icon, calling your attention to a possibly risky situation
Warning
Tesla does not guarantee the quality of interaction between your vehicle and a third-party child safety seat. Do not rely solely on the Smart Child Seat app. Always use your own eyes and judgment.
