Rate Plan Charging

If you have Powerwall and either Wall Connector 3 or Universal Wall Connector installed in your home, you can use Rate Plan Charging to reduce your home charging costs. Rate Plan Charging uses your home energy rate plan to determine when energy prices are lowest and automatically charges your vehicle at those times to save you money. Rate Plan Charging supports both Tesla vehicles and other compatible EVs.

How Rate Plan Charging Works

Rate Plan charging delivers low-cost charging to meet your daily driving needs, ensuring your vehicle is ready by your expected departure time. It does this by charging your vehicle during off-peak times, when energy is least expensive, and avoiding on-peak times, when energy is most expensive. With Rate Plan Charging, your vehicle will be charged with the lowest cost energy to meet your ‘Desired Charging Duration’ by your ‘End Charging By’ time.

Desired Charging Duration

The ‘Desired Charging Duration’ setting indicates the minimum amount of time you want to charge your vehicle. Rate Plan Charging will charge your vehicle for at least this amount of time. Once the desired charging duration is reached, Rate Plan Charging will continue charging your vehicle if your energy costs are still off-peak, or stop charging your vehicle if your energy costs are higher.

End Charging By

The ‘End Charging By’ setting is the time when you want to unplug your vehicle and start driving. Rate Plan Charging will ensure you reach your ‘Desired Charging Duration’ before your ‘End Charging By’ time.

How to Use Rate Plan Charging

If you meet the Rate Plan Charging home energy system requirements, you can turn on Rate Plan Charging in the Tesla app. To enable Rate Plan Charging, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Tesla app.
  2. Select your Powerwall.
  3. Tap ‘Settings.’
  4. Tap ‘Vehicle Charging.’
  5. Turn on the ‘Wall Connector Schedule’ toggle.

Once you’ve enabled Rate Plan Charging, you can adjust your rate plan, ‘Desired Charging Duration’ and ‘End Charging By’ settings.
